Coleman Hawkins All Stars

CD

✈
Not the sprawling session you'd usually get from a record with "all stars" in the title, and instead a tight small group record that features Coleman Hawkins at his later best! The setting is an outwardly trad one – recorded for the Swingville label with Joe Thomas on trumpet and Vic Dickenson on trombone – but there's a decidedly modern feel to the way that Hawk opens up the tunes – that undercurrent of darkness in his best later work, accented nicely by a hip rhythm trio that features Tommy Flanagan on piano, Wendell Marshall on bass, and Osie Johnson on drums. Titles include "Cool Blue", "Some Stretching", "You Blew Out The Flame In My Heart", and "More Bounce To The Vonce".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Coleman Hawkins

Wrapped Tight
Impulse/MCA, 1965. Used
Great later Coleman Hawkins on Impulse – just the sort of deep-toned, soulfully-blown record that makes all his sessions for the label so great! Hawk's very firmly in the lead on that classic tenor of his – but the rest of the lineup keeps things swinging too – with Snooky Young ... CD

Milt Jackson

Milt Jackson Quartet
Prestige/OJC, 1955. Used

Party Time

Cracklin'
Prestige/OJC, 1963. Used
A monster! This is a stellar session that has Booker Ervin's tenor fronting a tight group led by drummer Roy Haynes – all with an amazing sense of rhythm that's made the album a standout for years! Ervin is playing in his best modernist vein, and the rhythm section features the excellent ... CD
Fantasy/OJC, 1962. Used
A very cool date from Duke Ellington – one that's based strongly around the talents of tenorist Paul Gonsalves – always a key member of the Ellington ensemble, and quite a leader on his own in the 60s! The lineup is a familiar version of the Ellington orchestra – but the setting's ... CD
