Hollywood Stampede – Capitol Jazz Classics Vol 5

LP (Item 565608) Capitol, 1945 — Condition: Very Good+
Great mid 40s work from Coleman Hawkins – some singles recorded for Capitol, with work from an unusual array of players on the Hollywood scene! Most cuts feature the young Howard McGhee on trumpet – plus Sir Charles Thompson on piano, Allan Reuss on guitar, and either John Simmons or Oscar Pettiford on bass.  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Felsted/Master Jazz, 1958. Near Mint-
A near-forgotten gem from Coleman Hawkins excellent late 50s period – recorded for the short-lived Felsted label, and done in a beautifully relaxed way! Coleman Hawkins

Bean (10 inch LP)
EmArcy, Early 40s. Very Good
A 50s collection of material cut by Coleman Hawkins in the early 40s – working with a wonderful small combo that includes Teddy Wilson on piano and either Roy Eldridge or Buck Clayton on trumpet! Verve, 1962. Near Mint-
Long, lean, and later work by Coleman Hawkins – recorded in a beautifully stripped-down and free setting at the Village Gate! Coleman Hawkins

Today & Now
Impulse, 1962. Very Good Gatefold
A beautiful record – but that's no surprise, since most of the later work of Coleman Hawkins tends to be great! The setting is quite laidback – and Hawkins' time-weathered tenor is placed in a perfect setting with Tommy Flanagan on piano, Major Holley on bass, and Eddie Locke on drums. ... Coleman Hawkins

Gilded Hawk
Capitol, Mid 50s. Near Mint-
Tremendous work from Coleman Hawkins – a sublime "with strings" session from the 50s, and one of Bean's greatest albums from the decade! The setting is quite different than other sets with Hawk on tenor – soft strings from Glen Osser, cascading beautifully and gently – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Color Him Funky
Capitol, 1963. Very Good
Sweet soul jazz from Howard Roberts! Fantastic work from the massive electric years of the Cannonball Adderley Quintet – one of the group's last records to feature the keyboards of Joe Zawinul – and also one of the heaviest from the time! George Shearing

Shearing Bossa Nova
Capitol, 1962. Very Good
A heavenly album, and easily one of our favorite George Shearing records of the 60s – thanks to some sweet bossa arrangements by a young Clare Fischer!
