Trance

CD (Item 565202) Black Lion (UK), 1962 — Condition: Used
$6.99 ...

CD

Expanded CD reissue of a famous session that Cecil recorded at the Cafe Monmartre in Copenhagen in 1962 – and which was originally issued on Debut Records. Cecil's playing with Jimmy Lyons and Arthur "Sunny" Murray, and the recording's a great document of a key transitional period in his career – as tracks are really getting out there, with a lot more freedom than on earlier American sessions, but still with a bit of a jazz-based pulse. All tracks are long, and titles include "Trance", "Call", "Lena", and "D Trad, That's What". CD also features a 2nd version of "Call".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Sealed original 1996 Black Lion pressing.)

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Cecil Taylor

Air Above Mountains
Enja (Germany), 1976. Used
Freewheeling Cecil Taylor – heard here solo, in his best 70s mode – recorded live in Austria in 1976, playing beautifully on a Bosendorfer Grand piano! Taylor works wonders with the instrument – giving it a pyrotechnic workout during the extended performance on the set – at ... CD

Cecil Taylor

Jazz Advance
Blue Note, 1956. Used
One of the best pre-1960 sessions by Cecil Taylor, recorded in Boston in 1956, and originally issued on the totally rare Transition label in a very small pressing! Cecil Taylor

Looking Ahead!
Contemporary/OJC, 1958. Used
Cecil Taylor's definitely Looking Ahead here – pushing jazz piano very strongly into the 60s with his modernist tones – yet still working with a bit more restraint than in the next decade! The style here is quite unusual – and almost more fresh than the Taylor sound of later ... CD

Howard McGhee

Sharp Edge
Black Lion, 1961. Used
An obscure Howard McGhee session, but a great one! The 1961 session was recorded during Maggie's great comeback years – at a time when he was doing some great work for labels that included Bethlehem, Contemporary, and United Artists. The spirit of this set is similar to those – sort ... CD

Sonny Stitt

Autumn In New York
Black Lion (UK), 1962/1967. Used
Beautiful lost 60s material from Stitt – recorded without any tricks or gimmicks, in a solidly-blown mode that rivals his best work for Roost and Argo! The first 4 tracks of the set were recorded in New York in 1962 – with an unnamed group that lets Sonny really take the lead on sax, ... CD

Black Lion, 1964. Used

Black Lion (UK), 1969. Used
Fantastic material from the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – tracks recorded during their same crucial Paris trip of 1969 that also gave the world the better-known BYG/Actual albums – but delivered in a style that's slightly different overall! There's maybe more of the cerebral side of the ... CD
