CD

❔

A surprisingly great album from Syl Johnson's daughter! Syleena's got a bit of a bite in her vocals – almost a touch of blues, showing her link to the rich soul lineage of which her father was a part – but she's also working here with some sweet modern arrangements, bubbling under in a mix of NuSoul and current R&B approaches, nicely taking Syleena's rootsy vocals into a classier setting – and making of a compelling juxtaposition that really grabs us right away! Titles include "Faithful To You", "Now That I Got You", "So Willingly", "I Believe In Love", "Tonight I'm Gonna Let Go", and "Guess What".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible. All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

With our Used CDs, you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks — clean, and not dirty at all. You can also expect the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves — putting fresh cases on Used CDs we handle) — and you can expect the booklet to be in good shape, unless noted otherwise. We will list any specific details/defects underneath the item — so look for notes on cutout marks in the case, stamps on the barcode, or details like that.

Brand New Heavies

Original Flava
Acid Jazz/Hollywood, 1994. Used
Although this set came out in 1994, after the early years of the Brand New Heavies, it's actually a great compilation of rare and unreleased early stuff by the group! The set's a real treat if you've always liked their first release, but haven't really grooved to the later ones, because the sound ... CD

Alice Russell

Pot Of Gold
Little Poppet/Six Degrees, 2008. Used
Funky soul from the great Alice Russell – the first effort on her own label, and a killer set that's right up there with the greatness of previous albums! TM Juke produced, but the record has an even more stripped-down and soulful feel than before – a blend of funk and soul backings ... CD
Expansion (UK), 2002. Used
A great bit of smooth modern soul from Kloud 9 – an American duo with a sound that's reminiscent of the mellow Isley Brothers work of the late 70s and early 80s! These guys are totally great – warm, soulful, and in a mode that male vocalists hardly seem to match these days – ... CD

Anthony Hamilton

Point Of It All
So So Def, 2008. Used
The first album in a few years from the (still!!!) underappreciated Anthony Hamilton – an artist who emanates deep, true soulfulness from every breath – and balances classic southern soul styles with hip hop era production as deftly as anyone! Point Of It All might be Anthony's best ... CD

Remy Shand

Way I Feel
Motown, 2002. Used
Fantastic work by Remy Shand – one of the best soul singers we've heard in years! Despite his hipster looks, Remy's got a solid sound that's all-classic, all the way – deep and warm, with all the soulfulness of classic work by Marvin Gaye or Al Green, produced to perfection in a ... CD

Aloe Blacc

Good Things
Stones Throw, 2010. Used
Cinematic soul rooted in the rawer organ, drums and horns vibes that resonated deeply in records from north to south in the 70s – done with a lean, tight and head nodding groove no doubt informed by Aloe Blacc's own roots in hip hop – on his best album yet and one of best raw soul ... CD

Anthony Hamilton

Back To Love
RCA, 2011. Used
The best music from Anthony Hamilton in years – one of the brightest beacons of the modern soul scene standing out as brilliantly as ever on Back To Love! You get the feeling that the plan was to go all out with this album, not the Hamilton didn't put his all into past few records. That ... CD

Leon Bridges

Coming Home
Columbia, 2015. Used
An album with a very classic look on the cover – and an equally classic sound to match – one that takes us back to some of the hippest, coolest work by early 60s singers like Sam Cooke or Marvin Gaye! Both artists are a good comparison here, as Leon Bridges is unabashedly in the same ... CD
Verve/Talkin' Loud, 1997. Used
A tightly woven batch of jazzy soul tracks – the usual from Bluey and Incognito, classier than most soul you'll find on the market today, and with a depth that gives the work a distinctly classic sound! Titles include "Dark Side of The Cog", "Out Of The Storm", "Livin ... CD

Georg Levin

Can't Hold Back
Sonar Kollektiv (Germany), 2003. Used
A masterpiece of blue eyed soul – the debut album of Georg Levin, part of Jazzanova's Sonar Kollektiv, and one of the best new artists we've heard in years! Musically, Georg blends older styles of 70s soul with the warm jazzy beats and keys of the Compost German scene – taking things ... CD
