Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Atlantic, 1977. Used
The three or four shades of the blues here are all pretty darn deep – as Charles Mingus is returning to the soulful gospel-influenced mode he swung big in the early 60s! The record's something of a later predecessor of the classics Blues & Roots for Atlantic and Mingus (x5) for Impulse ... CD
Savoy (Japan), 1993. Used
A long overdue follow-up to Curtis Fuller's first Blues-Ette session for Savoy – one that was recorded 34 years after the original! The passage of time hasn't dampened the genius of the players, though – as Fuller's still tremendously in charge of his talents here, and is working with ... CD
Savoy, 1956. Used
One of Lee Morgan's first-ever recordings as a leader, cut way back when he was just a hip teenager from Philly with a bucketful of promise on the trumpet! The session's a crack hard bop date – with an all-star cast that includes Hank Mobley on tenor, Hank Jones on piano, Doug Watkins on ... CD

Johnny Griffin & Matthew Gee

Soul Groove
Atlantic/Collectables, 1964. Used
A heck of a soul jazz treasure from the 60s – and one of the hardest-hitting jazz albums ever issued by the Atlantic Records label! The vibe here is almost more Prestige Records overall – with very gutbuckety work from Johnny Griffin on tenor and Matthew Gee on trombone – on ... CD
Savoy/Vogue, 1961/1984. Used
The one and only album that Sun Ra ever cut for the Savoy label – a beautifully understated session that mixes more conventional jazz with some particularly Ra-like touches! The group on the set is extremely tight – especially the horn work of John Gilmore, Marshall Allen, and Pat ... CD

Ralph Moore

Who It Is You Are
Savoy/Columbia (Japan), 1989. Used
A key recording from one of our favorite tenor talents of the 80s – the amazing Ralph Moore, a player who really carries on a strong legacy from the 60s work of Hank Mobley! Like Mobley, Moore's got a very rich-voiced sound that's steeped in tradition, but which is also never afraid to take ... CD

Wallace Roney

No Job Too Big Or Small
Savoy/32 Jazz, Late 80s/Early 90s. Used
An excellent overview of the early Wallace Roney work for Muse Records – brilliant sessions that helped Roney redefine the sound of the trumpet for a whole new generation! Roney's sound was one of the boldest, brightest on the label – and on records like this he really shines – ... CD
Savoy (Japan), Mid 40s. Used
Classic early bop material from Dexter Gordon – originally issued as 78s in the 40s, and packaged here in a hip 50s album with a very groovy cover! The set features work from 1945, 1946, and 1947 – with Gordon in different three different groups – one with Leo Parker on baritone ... CD

Dizzy Gillespie

School Days
Savoy, 1951. Used
A bebop classic from Dizzy Gillespie – a full album comprised of some famous 78s recorded for the Savoy label at the start of the 50s – the kind of hard-grooving material that made Diz a fan favorite right from the start! There's some nice use of vocals in the mix – not just from ... CD
Atlantic (UK), 1975. Used
Wild and wonderful work by Keith Jarrett – light years away from his records on ECM! The album features a quartet that includes Dewey Redman on tenor, Charlie Haden on bass, and Paul Motian on drums – but it's clearly Keith who's driving the bus here, taking lots of odd twists and ... CD
Blue Note, 1967. Used
As pure a distillation of McCoy Tyner's lyrical vision as one could ever hope for – a brilliant early standout session for the pianist as a leader! McCoy is backed up here by the energetic drumming of Elvin Jones – with whom he shares a natural empathy from their many years together ... CD
