An album that definitely lives up to its title – given the great change and evolution in the style of Cannonball Adderley's music – definitely pointed towards the soul jazz fame to come in the 60s! The group here has Adderley's alto in the company of some all-stars who may not be his regular group, but who definitely help keep the whole thing at a top-shelf level throughout – a quintet that features Milt Jackson on vibes, Wynton Kelly on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Art Blakey on drums. There's still a few echoes of Cannon's earlier bop recordings, but the sound is also moving towards the new modes to come – especially on the classic title cut "Things Are Getting Better". Other cuts include "Just One Of Those Things", "Sounds For Sid", "Groovin High", "Serves Me Right", and "Blues Oriental". CD includes two alternate takes.  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Mercury (Japan), Late 50s. Used
Cannonball Adderley's enroute to a great jazz legacy here – stepping out in a groove that begins to show some of the soul jazz modes he was forging at the end of the 50s – a great change from the straighter bop styles of his early years! The lineup here is a wonderful early expression ... CD
Capitol (Japan), Mid 60s. Used
A nice once – certainly not as funky as some of Cannon's other work for Capitol, but with a dark edge that really makes it great! The core Cannonball quintet of Nat Adderley, Joe Zawinul, et al, is set up in string arrangements by Ray Ellis – a bit flowery at times, but in a way that ... CD

Cannonball In Japan
Capitol, 1966. Used
A rare live set by Cannonball Adderley – unreleased in America at the time, and performed with the style of Cannon's best work for Riverside! The album's very similar to some of the group's best live sets for Riverside – like the San Francisco or other Tokyo recording – done with ... CD

Mercy, Mercy, Mercy!
Capitol, 1966. Used
If the 60's ever had a "hit" jazz record, it was probably this one! The album's a sparkling live session featuring the trademark soul jazz sounds of the Cannonball Adderley group with Joe Zawinul on acoustic and electric piano, and brother Nat Adderley on cornet. The tracks have a long ... CD

Gerry Wiggins

Wiggin Out
Hi Fi/OJC, 1960. Used
Quite an unusual little album for Gerald Wiggins – a set that features him on the Hammond organ instead of the piano, recorded as a rare soul jazz outing by a young David Axelrod! The session's got a vamping intensity that's quite different from most of the other LA jazz on the Hi Fi label, ... CD

McCoy Tyner

Trident
Milestone/OJC, 1975. Used
A nice 70s trio side with Tyner's lyrical, spiraling piano lines nicely underpinned by Elvin Jones' polyrhythms and Ron Carter's supple bass. Three Tyner originals: "Celstial Chant", "Elvin (Sir) Jones" and "Land Of The Lonely", plus Trane's "Impressions", ... CD

Charlie Parker

Bird At St Nicks
Fantasy/OJC, 1950. Used
Posthumous issue of an early 50s live set by Charlier Parker – one of the many that were rushed to the public in the years after his early death. The set, like many of the other live ones from the time, isn't recorded that well – but the music is still pretty wonderful. There's a real ... CD

Jack McDuff

Tough Duff
Prestige/OJC, 1960. Used
One of Jack McDuff's first albums as a leader – and a really solid cooker that also features vibes and tenor sax! Given that McDuff hardly ever recorded with vibes again, the session's got a real standout sound that deserves to be heard – as Jack's smoking work on the Hammond comes ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1959. Used
A classic set to feature the Bill Evans Trio with the great Scott Lafaro on bass and Paul Motian on drums!
