Remember When?

LP (Item 560559) Mercury, Late 50s — Condition: Very Good+
(Mono black label pressing. Cover has light wear.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Musicor, Mid 60s. Very Good+
Great work from the Musicor years of The Platters – a time when they packed a lot mroe soul into their style! LP, Vinyl record album
Musicor, Late 60s. Very Good+
Quite different than The Platters' 50s pop recordings – much more in a soul mode, with a heavier sound that almost sounds like work you'd hear on Stax or Brunswick from the same period. Gone are the sweetly perfect vocals of tracks like "Only You", and in their place are some ... LP, Vinyl record album
Mercury, 1959. Very Good+
Overlooked genius from Brook Benton – moving past his simple hit style here to work with arranger Belford Hendricks in a set of tunes that's a bit more "singerly". The tracks are mostly ballads and slower, sadder numbers – sung by Brook in a style that's slightly emotive, but ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bar-Kays

Injoy
Mercury, 1979. Near Mint-
Later Bar-Kays at their best – still plenty funky, but also working in a smoothly soulful style that became the group's trademark sound at Mercury! The album's got a real bass-heavy appeal from the start – working in a mode that shares a lot with Cameo, The Gap Band, and some of the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ohio Players

Angel
Mercury, 1977. Very Good Gatefold
Maybe the last great album in the Ohio Players run for Mercury in the mid 70s – a set that's every bit as smooth, sexy, and funky as their other major label efforts from the time – and one that continued to refine the grittier funk of their roots! While the Players might be remembered ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gap Band

Gap Band III
Mercury, 1980. Sealed
A great one from the Gap Band – funky gems and sinister groovers – the best of both worlds for the group! Tunes like "Burn Rubber On Me (When You Want To Hurt Me)" and "Humpin" packed 80s dance floors for good reason, and put the band in steady rotation, while ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gap Band

Gap Band (1979)
Mercury/Total Experience, 1979. Near Mint-
The start of the legendary second chapter for the Gap Band – the point when the group had reemerged as the tight funky trio of the Wilson Brothers, with a groove that would really set them up nicely for the 80s! This first album in the new format has a wonderfully tight feel – still ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bohannon

Too Hot To Hold
Mercury, 1979. Near Mint-
One of the most full-on funk albums that Bohannon recorded for Mercury – a set done with a sextet of additional players, in a groove that's much more in the ensemble mode of other funk acts on the label! The usual Bohannon drive is still in full effect, though – and Hamilton's rhythms ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chuck Berry & The Steve Miller Band

Live At The Fillmore Auditorium
Mercury, Late 60s. Very Good
The cover's a bit trippy, but the sound is anything but – and instead stands as a strong tribute to the way the early work of Chuck Berry continued to influence a generation of rockers well through the 60s! Berry's the frontman, and gets plenty of chance to sing and sear on guitar – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bohannon

Phase II
Mercury, 1977. Near Mint-
Sweet disco work from the great Hamilton Bohannon! The title includes one mellower number – "Daddy's Little Son" – a dedication to his son, whose picture is on the cover of the album – plus the groovers "Andrea", "But What Is A Dream", "Bohannon' ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Chandler

Duke Of Soul
Checker, 1967. Very Good+
Fantastic bit of soul by Gene Chandler, and despite the "hit" referred to in the title, the album's a great batch of stuff that doesn't really see the light of day that often! Includes his great remake of "Rainbow", titled "Rainbow 65", and featuring some amazing live ... LP, Vinyl record album
