Buck Hill blows mean and lean here – working in a quartet with a solidly soulful finish, one that's perfect for his well-schooled sound on the tenor sax! The album's got a really non-nonsense feel – production from Houston Person that keeps the sound plenty clean, and very focused on Buck's wonderful horn – and rhythms that never try too hard to be contemporary, and instead relax nicely in the older soul jazz groove that fits Hill's solo style the best. Titles include original numbers "Ottawa Bash", "Impulse", and "Random Walk" – plus "Now's The Time", "Blues In The Closet", "Solitude", and "How Do You Keep The Music Playing".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Kenny Barron

Sunset To Dawn
Muse, 1973. Used
Sublime 70s work from Kenny Barron – a record that really has him stretching out strongly from his roots in the 60s, and sounding almost even more inventive than on some of his later material as well! Kenny's playing a fair bit of keyboards on the set – showing a wonderful sensitivity ... CD

Setting Standards
32 Jazz/Muse, 1983. Used

Johnny Lytle

Moonchild (Muse)
Muse, 1991. Used
A later set by soul jazz vibist Johnny Lytle – but a great one too, and a date that's done with a straight ahead mode that shows he's still swinging hard! The record's a bit less groove-oriented than some of Lytle's earlier efforts, but in ways that really focus on his longer-wind chops as a ... CD

Jack Walrath

Gut Feelings
Muse, 1990. Used
A really compelling album from trumpeter Jack Walrath – just the sort of effort that gets us to take a lot closer work at his other work as a leader! The album's got a very ambitious sort of feel – a core combo backed by larger strings – all in a range of unusual rhythms and ... CD

Stan Getz with Chet Baker & Astrud Gilberto

Live At Newport 1964 (with bonus tracks)
Solitude, 1964. Used
Fantastic Stan Getz material from the 60s – a beautiful live set recorded right around the same time as Stan's Getz-A-Go-Go album – and, like that one, also features great vibes from Gary Burton and a bit of guest vocals from Astrud Gilberto! The main focus is on Stan's core sound with ... CD
