Pictures At An Exhibition Framed In Jazz

LP (Item 560506) AVA, Early 60s — Condition: Near Mint-

(Cover has a cutout hole and some light aging.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Pete Jolly

Sweet September
AVA, 1963. Near Mint-
Great work from one of the grooviest pianists of the 60s – a player who could always keep things lively and swinging, even in a small combo session! The album's one of Pete Jolly's gems for the Ava label – a follow-up to his semi-hit Little Bird, and like that one, a record done with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Joe Beck

Beck
Kudu, 1975. Near Mint-
A great little Kudu set from guitarist Joe Beck – a player who's sounding a lot tighter here than some of his odd psychedelic experiments of the 60s – but still pretty darn great overall! The style is smooth, as you'd expect from Kudu, but Joe's still got plenty of edges in his guitar ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gary Burton

Good Vibes
Atlantic, 1970. Near Mint-
Gary Burton hits a sweet electric funky sound here – a great groove that really makes the album stand out from most of his other work! The support Burton gets is a big reason for the greatness of the date – as he's working in a group that includes Eric Gale on guitar, Richard Tee on ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1963/1964. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A pretty nice 2LP set that collects together McCoy's early trio sides for Impulse – pulled from albums that were issued under his own name, and mostly featuring Coltrane-based lineups that either include Jimmy Garrison or Art Davis on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. The set features 2 tunes ... LP, Vinyl record album

Oscar Peterson

Eloquence
Limelight, 1965. Near Mint- Gatefold
A sprightly mid 60s session from the Oscar Peterson Trio – one of the last live recordings from the famous lineup that featured Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums! The performance was captured at the Tivoli Gardens, in Copenhagen – and recorded in an open style that really gets ... LP, Vinyl record album

Howard McGhee

Shades Of Blue
Black Lion, 1961. Near Mint-
An obscure Howard McGhee session, but a great one! The 1961 session was recorded during Maggie's great comeback years – at a time when he was doing some great work for labels that included Bethlehem, Contemporary, and United Artists. The spirit of this set is similar to those – sort ... LP, Vinyl record album

Billy Cobham

Magic
Columbia, 1977. Near Mint- Gatefold
A real jammer of a record from Billy Cobham – almost a summation of all the work he'd done in earlier years, smoothed out with a sweet funky late 70s fusion groove! The sound on the set is really tight – still plenty hard on the instrumentation, but also with a focus that we really ... LP, Vinyl record album

Buddy Rich

New One!
Pacific Jazz, 1967. Near Mint- Gatefold
Very hard-burning work from Buddy's hip band of the mid 60s – a large ensemble, but one that features searing horn parts that cut through the bigger arrangements with ease! Buddy really had an ear for tuning power with personality at this point in his career – and although the group ... LP, Vinyl record album
Capitol, 1961. Near Mint-
A classic jazz interpretation of the score to West Side Story – served up in ultra-hip fashion by the Stan Kenton Orchestra! Although the tunes are familiar, the readings are extremely creative – and use Leonard Bernstein's original music as the starting point for a rich tapestry of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Epic, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold
One of the most starkly beautiful recordings in Paul Horn's career – with spiritually resonant, almost spine tingling solo flute and some chants, all recorded in the Taj Majal one day in April of 1968! It's really all about the atmosphere, as it would have to be given the location – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1971. Near Mint-

Joao Gilberto

Amoroso
Warner, 1977. Near Mint-
A warmly intimate album from Joao Gilberto – one that has the singer and guitarist in the same special space as his wonderful albums from the early 70s - a bit more sophisticated than the bossa years, but equally personal throughout! The set was co-produced by Helen Keane – who was ... LP, Vinyl record album
