To Bags With Love – Memorial Album

CD (Item 559936) Pablo, Late 50s/Early 60s/1970s/Early 80s — Condition: Used
Out Of Stock

A loving tribute to the late Milt Jackson – built out of work from two different points in his career! The first section of tunes here come from Milt's Riverside label recordings of the late 50s and early 60s – swinging tracks heavy on vibes, recorded at the time in ways that were quite different than his more famous sides with the MJQ. Other work here is from Milt's years as a leader at Pablo Records in the 70s and early 80s – a place where he was able to stretch out, try new ideas, and, most importantly, get the chance to record in a relaxed, open-ended setting that made for some mighty soulful music! Players on the dates include Benny Carter, Count Basie, Cannonball Adderley, Wes Montgomery, Oscar Peterson, and others – and titles include "Mister Basie", "Blues For Edith", "Recado Bossa Nova", "SKJ", "If You Could See Me Now", "Bags Groove", "Yano", and "Corner Pocket".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Riverside, 1962. Used Gatefold
A very nice little Mlt Jackson album – cut in the mode of some of his excellent soul jazz group sides from the mid 60s. This set pushes Milt past the format of much of his other work – especially that of the MJQ – as it features him in a very soulful sextet, working with Tommy ... CD

Roll Em Bags
Savoy, 1949/1956. Used
Savoy Bop side featuring the amazing Lucky Thompson on tenor(on three cuts), and a larger lineup on the rest of the album, with Milt featured on piano as well as vibraphone, in a group led by the rhythmic pioneer Kenny Clarke. Milt Jackson

Plenty, Plenty Soul
Atlantic, 1957. Used
Plenty plenty soul here – as Milt Jackson's moving away from the Modern Jazz Quartet, and working with a great group of players that really expand his sound! The session's a bit like some of Milt's soul jazz work for Riverside and other labels – in that it's got rhythms, timings, and ... CD

Bags' Opus
Blue Note, 1959. Used
One of the greatest Milt Jackson albums ever – thanks to an incredible lineup that features Art Farmer on trumpet and Benny Golson on tenor – both of whom give the record a lot more edge than usual for Jackson! The set's almost a maturation of the earliest modern grooves that Milt ... CD

My Mama Pinned A Rose On Me
Pablo/OJC, 1977. Used
Mary Lou Williams is dipping far back into her roots here – working in a very bluesy batch of styles, with only accompaniment from Buster Williams on bass to back her up! The tracks are all relatively shortish, and done in styles that stretch back to older modes of 20s and 30s jazz piano ... CD

Oscar Peterson

Time After Time
Pablo, 1986. Used
A relatively laidback set from Oscar Peterson – just the kind of record we need to remind us of his strengths on the mellower side of the spectrum! The recording's a live one – done in LA in 1986 – and Peterson still brings a gentle vamp to most numbers, but also has an open, ... CD
