Funk N Fun

LP (Item 559646) Yupiteru (Japan), 1979 — Condition: Near Mint-
One of our favorite albums ever cut under the leadership of trombonist Bill Watrous – a set that was part of a Japanese-only series that brought together some of the best players on the west coast scene at the end of the 70s! Watrous is maybe not as well-associated with the older LA jazz world as some of his associates on the set – who include the great Art Pepper on alto sax and Russ Freeman on piano – both of whom really open up in compelling ways next to Bill's trombone – especially Pepper, as he often wasn't recording with such a horn on his own albums of the time. The rest of the combo features Bob Magnusson on bass and Carl Burnett on drums – and the easygoing vibe of the record really makes for some well-shaped, well-blown notes from Watrous. Titles include "Funny Blues", "P Town", "For Art's Sake", "Begin The Beguine", "Angel Eyes", and "Just Friends".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Knack
Cadet, 1965. Near Mint-
Fantastic bit of lost Chicago jazz, featuring an incredibly tight and soulful combo made up of a bunch of obscure players who never really made it otherwise. The group features George Patterson on alto and soprano, Charles Kinnard (not Kynard) on tenor, Cleo Griffin on trumpet, and Tom Washington ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Smith & Wes Montgomery

Jimmy & Wes – The Dynamic Duo
Verve, 1966. Very Good- Gatefold
Excellent meeting between 2 mighty talents who rarely recorded together! Oliver Nelson did the arrangements and leads a big band, but the real focus is on Jimmy and Wes' solos, which are given a lot of room to roam in long tracks like "James & Wes", "Night Train", and " ... LP, Vinyl record album

McCoy Tyner

Trident
Milestone, 1975. Very Good+
A nice 70s trio side with Tyner's lyrical, spiraling piano lines nicely underpinned by Elvin Jones' polyrhythms and Ron Carter's supple bass. Three Tyner originals: "Celestial Chant", "Elvin (Sir) Jones" and "Land Of The Lonely", plus Trane's "Impressions", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Smith

Respect
Verve, 1967. Very Good+ Gatefold
Mad respect for Jimmy Smith – a cool small group record that's different than some of his bigger-concept, larger arrangement records for Verve! The groove here is tight and right on the money – and the tracks are a bit longer than other Verve sessions too – as the master really ... LP, Vinyl record album
Ode, 1974. Very Good+
A real breakout moment for reedman Tom Scott – the first truly big album for the saxophonist who'd been blowing some great records on his own, and lending his horn to a host of classic jazz and soul sessions too! The groove is a lot sharper and tighter than earlier Scott albums, but never ... LP, Vinyl record album

Donald Byrd & Gigi Gryce

Jazz Lab (Columbia)
Columbia, Late 50s. Very Good+
Wonderful work from the team of Donald Byrd and Gigi Gryce! Byrd is at his youthful best here – blowing with a soulful imagination that's surprising, given his young age, and honed to a modern edge by the arrangements of Gryce. Conversely, Gryce's tone on the alto is fantastic – less ... LP, Vinyl record album
Polydor, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold
A large group in a small club – the legendary Clarke Boland Big Band, playing at the home turf of one of their key members – tenorist Ronnie Scott! The set features a very legendary performance by the ensemble – a crack lineup that's easily one of the best ever sported by the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Ear Wax/Wonderland, 1978. Sealed
An obscure little funky group from Flint, Michigan, one with a tight ensemble sound that's very much in the Earth Wind & Fire mode – complete with a really great horn section, plenty of bass-heavy grooves a the bottom, and a relatively spiritual feel that comes through strongly on the ... James Brown

Payback
Polydor, 1973. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A masterpiece of funky soul – and one of the greatest albums of the early 70s! It all comes together on this one – funk, soul, politics, and production – and the record is still one of the clearest examples of James Brown's genius that you'll ever find! Recorded during the same ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tony Kosinec

Processes
Columbia, 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold
A beautiful little record from Tony Kosinec – a lesser-known songwriter from the late 60s scene, and one with a pretty unusual sound as well! Tony originally hails from the UK, but was working in Canada at the time of this set – and the album's an unusual blend of folksy roots with ... LP, Vinyl record album
