✈
Johnny Mathis' self-titled debut from 1956 – an all-jazz album that's quite different than most of his other work! Mathis here is working in a decidedly modern style – none of the smooth, mellow pop of his hits – and instead awash in sharp edges, rich colors, and modern sounds served up by the charts of arrangers Gil Evans, Teo Macero, and John Lewis! Johnny's vocals have that familiar warm and smooth quality, but also a subtle sense of tension and drama too – one that really makes the tunes, even the familiar ones, come alive as miniature little portraits in sound – painted with a brush that's confident, but youthful enough to be fresh! Players include Phil Woods, Art Farmer, JJ Johnson, Tony Scott, Hal McKusick, and John Lewis – and titles include "Street Of Dreams", "Caravan", "Prelude To A Kiss", "Star Eyes", "Autumn In Rome", "Babalu", "Fly Me To The Moon", and "Angel Eyes".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Judy Holliday

Trouble Is A Man
Columbia/Sony, Late 50s. Used
An obscure bit of boozy sad songs – proof that Holliday had a lot more to offer than just an extremely strong showing on Broadway. She's working here with arrangements by Glen Osser that sort of take off from the spirit of "The Party's Over" – sad and dreamy, but also with a ... CD

Lambert, Hendricks & Ross

Hottest New Group In Jazz
Columbia/Sony (France), Late 1950s. Used

Sweet vocals in a spare setting – sung in English by Japanese vocalist Kimiko Itoh, and recorded in New York with arrangements by Richard Tee and Steve Gadd! Given their presence, there's a distinctly 70s feel to the album, despite the date of the session – and most numbers move gently ... CD

Cassandra Wilson

Traveling Miles
Blue Note, 1999. Used
Cassandra Wilson's tribute to Miles Davis – a pretty brave and ambitious move, writing lyrics to classic Miles compositions – and a winning one! Wilson produced the record, too, and her genuine love of the material makes it worth – as does her fairly earthy, timeless production. ... CD
Candid (UK), 1960. Used
A wonderful jazzy vocals set from Nancy Harrow – her first, and one of the rare few albums she cut as a headliner early on – a should be classic from 1960! Wild Women Don't Have The Blues, production wise, as a pretty deep stylistic range, from the very jazzy numbers like the opening ... CD

Always-great work from singer Lorez Alexandria – still sounding wonderful, even at this late date! Her presentation's a bit earthier than before, but no less poised than on earlier sessions – with the same sense of space and timing that's always made her one of our favorite jazz ... CD
