Basic Black

LP (Item 55858) GRT, 1975 — Condition: Sealed
2LP

Compilation put together by the GRT label in the mid 70s, who owned the chess/cadet group of labels, so it's heavy on the Chicago sound. There's a few cuts from ABC records too, like the Impressions "It's All Right" and Bobby Bland's "Turn On Your Love Light", but basically the track listing reads like the playlist from WVON or WBEE from the early 70s, loads of heavy hitting South Side R&B and soul numbers: the Dells "Stay In My Corner", Gene Chandler "I Fooled You This Time", Fontella Bass "Rescue Me", Pigmeat Markham "Here Comes the Judge" and Ramsey Lewis' "Wade in the Water" and 18 more!  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a cut corner. Shrinkwrap is a bit aged.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Chess, 1966. Very Good
This was the follow-up LP to Billy Stewart's huge single of Gershwin's "Summertime", and it's got a similar approach of "funky soul takes on American pop music standards". "Summertime" isn't on the album, but all the tracks have a sound that falls in the same mode ... LP, Vinyl record album
Polydor, 1979. Very Good
An oft-overlooked funky soul gem from the incredible Roy Ayers – taking turns with both uptempo material and more smoothed out soul sounds – all done with Roy's trademark jazzy approach to the dancefloor! Donny Hathaway

Extension Of A Man
Atco, 1973. Very Good Gatefold
Perhaps Donny Hathaway's greatest album from the 70s, and certainly the one with the most amazing arrangements! Romantico
Zemajo/Precision, 1982. Near Mint-

Night People
Westbound, 1976. Very Good
One of their uptempo groovers from the mid 70's, with a mix of classic Detroit group soul and tighter disco sounds that were creeping into the Westbound label at the time. Phil Upchurch

Feeling Blue
Milestone, 1967. Sealed
Probably the best jazz album that Phil Upchurch ever cut! Jimmy Castor Bunch

Maximum Stimulation
Atlantic, 1977. Very Good
It's the late 70s, so you know things are beginning to wind down a bit for Jimmy Castor, but even though this doesn't pack the same funky punch as It's Just Begun, it's still a solid effort, if a bit polished for our taste. As the title implies, it's full-on funk from the get go, with the bass ... LP, Vinyl record album

Feels So Good
Kudu, 1975. Very Good
