Mating Call

CD (Item 557883) Prestige/OJC, 1956 — Condition: Used
$4.99 ...

CD

A sublime early set from John Coltrane – and one of Tadd Dameron's greatest moments on record ever! The session's a laidback quartet one – with John Simmons on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums, completing the group with Dameron on piano and Trane on tenor – all coming together in a style that's loose, but still quite sharp overall – especially given Coltrane's tremendous tone, which really helps take the record to the next level from the very first moment it comes into the mix! Dameron's piano is strong, but subtle – and his compositions are what really make the record great – tunes that include "Soultrane", "Mating Call", "Romas", "Super Jet", and "On A Misty Night".  © 1996-2022, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Bill Evans

Explorations
Riverside/OJC, 1961. Used
The Bill Evans trio with Scott LaFaro on bass and Paul Motian on drums – a near-perfect lineup that forever raised the bar for jazz piano expression! The title here is certainly apt – because even though many of the tunes are shortish, Evans has a sense of exploration in the way he's ... CD
Fantasy/OJC, 1953. Used
Classic early live material from the Dave Brubeck Quartet – already humming along nicely with some great alto sax from Paul Desmond! The group's in fine form here – a bit more relaxed and open than on their Columbia recordings – with plenty of creative piano lines from Dave, ... CD

Miles Davis

Bags Groove
Prestige/OJC, 1954. Used
Classic Miles Davis from that pivotal year of 1954 – featuring work from 2 different sessions, both of them great! The title track on the album is a key reading of "Bag's Groove", presented here in two versions, both recorded by a quintet that includes Milt "Bags" Jackson ... CD
Contemporary/OJC, 1961. Used
A really nice set from Shelly Manne! After having a bit of a minor hit with a crime jazz album dedicated to the music of Peter Gunn, Shelly and combo turn towards a less-remembered TV cop show for more music in a similar vein. Checkmate was a short-lived show from the early 60s, but it had a ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1958. Used
Everybody Digs Bill Evans – or at least it certainly seems that way from the cover endorsements by Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderley, and Ahmad Jamal – but the real proof is in the record, and the set is a great one from Bill's classic years on Riverside! Evans is at the peak of his ... CD
Jazzland/OJC, 1961. Used
A firey little trio session from Junior Mance – one that features tracks taken at a pace that's even more uptempo than usual, and which really pushes his skills on the keys! The speed of the set is by no means a detriment to Mance's soulful playing – and if anything, the record stands ... CD
Fantasy/OJC, 1953. Used
A great set – unissued material from the same concert that gave us the original College Of The Pacific album! Classic early live material from the Dave Brubeck Quartet – already humming along nicely with some great alto sax from Paul Desmond! The group's in fine form here – a ... CD

Red Garland

It's A Blue World
Prestige/OJC, 1958/1970. Used
Obscure material by Garland – sides recorded in 1958, but not issued until this 1970 LP! The tracks are from the richest point in Garland's recording career, and were done with the great rhythm section of Paul Chambers on bass and Art Taylor on drums. The record's got some nice long tracks, ... CD
Prestige, 1956. Used
An unusual title, but one that refers to Jackie McLean in quartet, quintet, and sextet formation – a growing lineup that develops along the course of the record, as new players are added into the mix with a casual, almost blowing session approach! The set begins with Jackie's alto set out in ... CD

Bill Evans

Portrait In Jazz
Riverside/OJC, 1959. Used
A classic set to feature the Bill Evans Trio with the great Scott Lafaro on bass and Paul Motian on drums! Listening to the set we're reminded of what always brings us back to Evans' playing – a quality that's often described as moody, but which is really is quite spry and lively throughout ... CD

Trombone Shorty

Lifted
Blue Note, 2022. Used
Trombone Shorty just keeps on honing his groove – finding a way to add in new bits with each new album, while still holding on to enough of his New Orleans roots in the process! This set's definitely got Shorty reaching for the sky – as much of a soul album as a jazz one, with his ... CD

Ferg Ireland Trio

Ferg Ireland Trio Vols 1 & 2
Monde Green (UK), 2021. Used
A really freewheeling trio from the UK – not Ireland, as you might expect from the leader's name – the great bassist Ferg Ireland, who works real magic here at the head of a group that also features Nathaniel Facey on alto and James Madden on drums! At first glance, you might think of ... CD
