CD

✈
Plenty of Hammond Heroes here – served up in assortment of 13 organ-based jazz tunes recorded for Prestige Records from the late 50s to the late 60s! There's a great range of work here – from the first hard-burning organ work that simmered into jazz music from R&B, to the leaner, cleaner style of the 60s onward – when the instrument really started to hit some groovy notes! Some of the tracks here were recorded with saxophonists as the leader, but all feature Hammond players in strong focus – and titles include "Take Five" by Trudy Pitts, "One Track Mind" by Freddie Roach, "Misty" by Richard Groove Holmes, "Donald Duck" by Don Patterson, "Pool Shark" by Willis Jackson, "Twistin The Jug" by Gene Ammons, "Please Mr Jackson" by Willis Jackson, "Sticks & Stones" by Johnny Hammond Smith, "Takin Care Of Business" by Shirley Scott, "Crib Theme" by Red Holloway, and "Rock Candy" by Jack Mc Duff.  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Booker Ervin

Exultation!
Prestige/OJC, 1963. Used
A fantastic set by Booker Ervin, and one of his most overlooked sessions! Ervin's hard biting tenor is met by a warm thoughtful group that includes the great Horace Parlan on piano, plus Frank Strozier on alto, and Walter Perkins on drums. Perkins is wonderful, and he lyrically dances about the ... CD
Prestige/OJC, Early 50s. Used
One of the best-ever documents of the young genius of tenorist Wardell Gray – exactly the kind of music that shows why he was one of the biggest and best of the bop saxophonists – before he was taken away from us all too soon! The material here was originally issued on 78s or 45s, and ... CD

Oliver Nelson with Johnny Hammond & Lem Winchest

Taking Care Of Business
New Jazz/Prestige/OJC, Early 60s. Used

Dexter Gordon

Panther!
Prestige/OJC, 1970. Used
An overlooked US date from 1970 – a set that Dexter Gordon recorded during a quick stop home from his time abroad – really cooking away in the Prestige studios with a great little rhythm section, in ways that are quite different than his better-known European work of the time! The ... CD

Impulse/MCA (Japan), 1964. Used
A nice little 60s album by Johnny Hodges – one of the few post-Verve sessions that has him still playing in the hard swinging Ellingtonia small combo mode of the 50s! Players are all strong – and include Jimmy Jones, Cat Anderson, Ray Nance, Harry Carney, and Paul Gonsalves – and ... CD
Impulse, 1970. Used
Pharoah Sanders is working here with some excellent horn players in the frontline – Woody Shaw on trumpet and Gary Bartz on alto sax – both of whom really bring a lot of power to the record! As with some of Sanders' other Impulse albums of the period, the record only features two long ... CD
