Dave Brubeck's Greatest Hits

LP (Item 557459) Columbia, Late 50s/Early 60s — Condition: Sealed
11 of Brubeck's greatest, including "Time Out", "I'm In A Dancing Mood", "Bossa Nova USA", "Blue Rondo A La Turk", and more.  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Later US pressing, still sealed with Nice Price sticker.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Fantasy, 1950. Very Good+
Amazing work from the young Dave Brubeck – tunes that are definitely distinctive, given his fresh modern approach to the music! The group's an octet, with Paul Desmond on alto – and titles include Brubeck arrangements of "Let's Fall In Love", "Love Walked In", " ... LP, Vinyl record album
Decca, 1968. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A very unusual high-concept project from Dave Brubeck – with the man himself on piano, in a setting that features the Cinncinnatti Symphony conducted by Erich Kunzel, with voices too! LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, 1960. Near Mint-

Dave Brubeck

A La Mode
Fantasy, 1960. Very Good
An unusual Dave Brubeck set from the start of the 60s – surprisingly on Fantasy, given his Columbia fame of the time – and with a slightly different lineup that features the great Bill Smith on clarinet! Smith's got a cool modern sound that's not unlike Jimmy Giuffre – icy but ... LP, Vinyl record album
Fantasy, Early 50s. Very Good+
Really great early work from Dave Brubeck – recorded with his early trio that included Cal Tjader on both drums and vibes – instruments he'd sometimes play on the same track! Cal's so young here, the notes are billing him as "Callen Tjader" on the label – and the rest ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dave Brubeck

Time Out
Columbia, 1959. Very Good Gatefold
Easily the crowning moment of genius for the legendary Dave Brubeck Quartet – the moment when all things came together magically, and the group somehow elevated themselves to a whole new level in jazz! At the time of the set, Brubeck, Paul Desmond, and the rest had already been making plenty ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dave Brubeck

Jazz Goes To College
Columbia, 1954. Near Mint-
The Dave Brubeck Quartet goes to college – a pretty good place for the combo, considering how many fans they had on campus in the 50s! The sound here is never too academic for the setting, though – just the same sort of Brubeck groove first forged in the small clubs in San Francisco ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, 1964. Near Mint-
An overlooked gem in the Dave Brubeck Columbia catalog – and a very hip set of "Eastern" tinged tracks! The album's theme is obvious from the title – as Dave pens a set of tracks reflecting his experiences on recent visits to Japan – but the sound and the style moves ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dexter Gordon

Sophisticated Giant
Columbia, 1977. Near Mint-
A really wonderful album from Dexter Gordon's later years at Columbia – and a rare session that pairs larger arrangements with his soulful voice on the tenor and soprano saxophone! Although other players worked often in this mode, the record may well be the only one of its type for Dexter ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

On The Corner
Columbia, 1972. Very Good+
A sublime bit of Miles Davis electric funk – one of the best-remembered electric sets from the 70s, and for good reason too! The tracks are long, the jams are hard, and the whole thing has a lot more funk than some of the noise you'd get on other Miles albums of the time – thanks to ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lonnie Liston Smith

Loveland
Columbia, 1978. Very Good
A beautiful album of smooth mellow jazzy grooves – and one that proves that Lonnie was still always great, even when he was getting the more mainstream production treatment. The record is similar to ones cut by other older jazz funk keyboardists at the time – like Ramsey Lewis or ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Hancock

Future Shock
Columbia, 1983. Near Mint-
The future is now! Or at least it seemed to be back in 1983 when Herbie teamed up with Bill Laswell to record this classic album of computer-driven keyboard grooves! Whatever you might think of the music, the record was a genius move for Herbie – who was kind of flopping around in a number ... LP, Vinyl record album
