We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

ABC, 1977. Near Mint- Gatefold
An undisputed masterpiece, and a record we never tire of hearing – unabashedly the inspiration for our years of jazzy exploration as adults, even though it was probably the closest thing we ever got to the genre as wee lads! Walter Becker & Donald Fagan raise their already-high bar to ... LP, Vinyl record album
Nilsson Schmilsson
RCA, 1971. Very Good+
One of Nilsson's best ever albums – with a more streamlined overall sound than some of his wildly eclectic earlier LPs – really putting a tight focus on both his vocal and songwriting genius! There's an easygoing charm to the album that's pretty much unrivaled in his catalog (and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Friends
Capitol, 1968. Very Good-
An under-discovered album from The Beach Boys – and one of our favorite records by the group! The set's kind of a slinking back to the personal, quirky territory of Smile, but with a somewhat more intimate, less-ambitious feel – one that comes off like a tapestry of simple expressions ... Drag City
Liberty, Early 60s. Very Good+
Jan & Dean at the height of their powers – hitting hard with a simple, no-nonsense sound that's completely sublime, and wonderfully compact – even though there's millions of LA musical forces going on in the background! The tunes are mostly driving little numbers that really push ... LP, Vinyl record album
Ze, 1982. Near Mint-
Cool quirky post-punk work from The Waitresses – a group who maybe were never as big as Blondie or Romeo Void, but shared a very similar space at the time! This album's best known for the classic "I Know What Boys Want" – a naughty little number that got plenty of dancefloor ... LP, Vinyl record album
Space Rangers
Mercury, 1974. Very Good+
Sure, this one might have bottomed out when it was first released – but it's an excellent batch of hard heavy space rock tracks, with great drums on many numbers, making it a legendary set for beatheads! Titles include the famously sampled "Sunshine Superman", "Hollywood ... LP, Vinyl record album
What's Up Tiger Lily?
Kama Sutra, 1966. Very Good+
An excellent soundtrack to one of the wildest Woody Allen movies ever made – a weird little film that has Woody dubbing fake English dialogue over a Japanese action picture! Nightfly
Warner, 1982. Very Good
A bit of jazzy magic from Fagen – stepping out from the cover of Steely Dan after the Gaucho album, and sounding pretty darn great on his own! The record is almost nostalgic, going back to a 50s of Brubeck, abstract expressionism, and pre-Castro Havana – filled with images that are a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Hassles
United Artists, 1967. Near Mint- Gatefold
Massively heavy rock from the Long Island scene – but with lots of tasty Memphis touches! The Hassles are clearly influenced by the mod crossover sound of mid 60s R&B – and they use a lot of organ on the set, mixed with trippy fuzzy guitars, and some occasional vocals in a Traffic-s ... Greetings From Asbury Park NJ
Columbia, 1973. Very Good Gatefold
The electrifying debut of Bruce Springsteen – flying the flag for earnest souls in the strange years of the early 70s, and busting right out of the gets in prime form! Loads of classics – including "For You", "Blinded By The Light", "Mary Queen Of Arkansas" ... LP, Vinyl record album
Wake Up – It's Tomorrow
Uni, 1967. Good
A great little second set from Strawberry Alarm Clock – much headier and tripped-out than their first!
