Carmen McRae (Mainstream)

LP (Item 556803) Mainstream, Mid 60s — Condition: Near Mint-
Gatefold
The cover's got a 70s look, but the material here is from that great mid-60s moment when the talents of Carmen McRae were really coming alive – and producer Bob Shad was on hand to capture all the magic in all of its glory! The Carmen heard here is completely different than the singer of the decade before – very much her own woman, and incredibly expressive but without ever sounding cliched – tuning each song into a subtle story with the help of the great Norman Simmons on piano, plus Victor Sproles on bass, and a young Stu Martin on drums. Most tunes are familiar, but completely transformed by Carmen's hipness – and titles include "Bye Bye Blackbird", "In My Solitude", "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most", "Long Before I Knew You/Just In Time", "Round Midnight", and "My Ship Is Coming In".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has light wear and aging.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Harmony, 1961. Very Good+
An overlooked gem from Carmen – one of her few albums for Columbia from the 60s, and a wonderfully swinging small group session that's got a much more relaxed feel than some of her earlier sets! The album's ostensibly a tribute to Billie Holiday – but it's taken in a way that's ... LP, Vinyl record album

(In the Unipak cover, with a bumped corner.) LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1971. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
The title sounds a bit ambitious, but the album's actually a great intimate date from Carmen McRae – a beautifully-recorded small combo performance – caught live at Donte's in LA, with a sound that hearkens back to some of Carmen's best work of the 50s! The format is spare and simple ... LP, Vinyl record album
Groove Merchant, 1973/1974. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
This double-length set brings together two albums' worth of work that Carmen McRae recorded for the Groove Merchant label in the early 70s! The style here is strongly jazzy, but with a firm dose of soul too – all in a mode that follows nicely from Carmen's late 60s sessions for Atlantic ... LP, Vinyl record album

Piano & Vocals
Jazzz, 1976. Very Good+
Quite an unusual session for Carmen – one recorded live at a small club in Japan, featuring Carmen on vocals and piano, with no other accompaniment! The sound is wonderful – spare, free, and more intimate than we're used to hearing her – and given how often Carmen was recorded in ... LP, Vinyl record album

Clea Bradford

Now
Mainstream, Mid 60s. Very Good+
A nice step forward for singer Clea Bradford – an artist who started out in bluesier territory that maybe reflected her St Louis roots – but who works here with arranger Jim Tyler, who sets her up in a sophisticated mix of jazzy styles! Bradford's vocals are quite dynamic – you ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sarah Vaughan

Feelin Good
Mainstream, Early 70s. Near Mint- Gatefold
Sarah Vaughn hit a very groovy new style on her handful of records for the Mainstream label in the early 70s – a new approach that offered her amazing voice a way to stretch out with some of the new sophistication of the time! The arrangements are still jazz, but they've taken a direction ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sarah Vaughan

Send In The Clowns
Mainstream, 1974. Near Mint-
The cover's a bit goofy, but the album's a standout in the 70s career of Sarah Vaughan – one of those sets in which she tried out newer, more contemporary material – and found that both her voice and the new style of arranging were a surprisingly good fit! Vaughan has help here from ... LP, Vinyl record album
Mainstream, 1974. Near Mint-
A fantastic 70s album from the great Sarah Vaughan – maybe one of her best small combo sessions of the decade – and a set that also makes room for some great instrumental contributions too! Nancy & Lee
Reprise, Late 60s. Very Good
One of the weirdest, wildest pop albums of the 60s – maybe the crowning achievement of both Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood – two artists who'd worked together before, but never with an intensity this great!
