cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.
Michael Henderson definitely does it all here – mixing jazz and soul and funk with his own strong sense of personality – all at a level that's head and shoulders above most of his contemporaries! Henderson's that rare breed in soul music – part of an elite 70s lineup who were ... LP, Vinyl record album
Smooth mellow soul by Michael Henderson – taking up where he left off with his work with Norman Connors, and proving that he was an even better vocalist than bassist. The overall sound of this one's perhaps a bit slicker than his first 2 albums on Buddah – but there's still some strong ... LP, Vinyl record album
One of Papa's roots, rock, and funk albums from the 70s – featuring old-timey vocals and jazz fiddle, next to some tighter 70s backings from the Midnight Sun combo! The style's a bit weird, but actually works well on the best numbers – thanks to some larger arrangements on the set from ... LP, Vinyl record album
An excellent Japanese-only collection that looks at the important contributions that Savoy Records made to the early years of doo wop – including work by Little David & The Harps, The Marshall Brothers, Ravens, Jimmy Jones & The Savoys, Luther Bond & His Emeralds, Johnny Otis, The ... LP, Vinyl record album
An overlooked gem from Gil Scott-Heron's classic years on Arista Records – recorded at a time when the singer and group were strongly working in a jazzy vein – even though Brian Jackson isn't part of the lineup! Gil learned plenty of lessons from his time with Jackson – ... LP, Vinyl record album
A really heady set from The Five Stairsteps – a record that shows the group looking older (and tougher!) on the cover, and one that also shows some maturity in their sound too! We're not sure what was in the water at the time, but these guys definitely seem to be drinking in a bit of the ... LP, Vinyl record album
An 80s soul classic – and one of those records that never seems to get old! The set's the first album from Juicy – recorded when they were more of a group than a studio duo, and working here with production from Deodato – who gives their sound some nice jazzy touches! That's no ... LP, Vinyl record album
A masterpiece of smooth jazzy funk – and super-hip session headed up by the young keyboardist Bernard Wright! Wright's working here with an insider crowd of jazz funk players that includes Bobby Broom, Dave Grusin, Marcus Miller, and Don Blackman, whose funky style is very similar to Wright's ... Transition is right – as the cover has Barbara floating above a Curtis Mayfield-ish scene of drugs, war, gambling, and Satan – a really righteous image that beautifully sums up the vibe of the record! The set was recorded at Sigma Sound in Philly – with excellent arrangements ... LP, Vinyl record album
Rock-solid Buddah work from Gladys Knight & The Pips – still pretty righteous on the vocal tip, but often a bit fuller and more polished than before! Knight shows a great talent for a mature ballad here – no big hits, but that's part of the charm of the set – as there's a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Gladys Knight steps out on her own – in her very first solo album, after years of recording with The Pips! The change has maybe a bit more focus on Knight's incredible vocals in the lead, but the approach is also strongly similar to the best work with The Pips at the same period – with ...
