Marion Brown Quartet

LP (Item 5552) ESP, 1966 — Condition: Very Good+

One of our favorite albums ever on the legendary ESP label – a rhythmic, soulful, early session by Marion Brown – recorded before his own albums on Impulse, but with a similar feel to the best new thing sessions of that label at the time! The group is superb – with Benny Maupin on sax, Alan Shorter on trumpet, Rashied Ali on drums, and Ronnie Boykins on bass, often playing in tandem with Reggie Johnson – for a unique double-pulsing feel that makes for a nice rhythmic thrust, especially on the side-long jammer "Capricorn Moon". Other titles include "Exhibition" and "27 Cooper Square".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Get Back! reissue pressing. Cover has light wear.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Sunny Murray

Sunny Murray (ESP)
ESP, 1966. Near Mint-
One of the greatest albums on ESP – and a darkly-tinged document that points strongly towards the future of jazz at the end of the 60s! The album's one of the most focused of the early ESP years – and it features drummer Sunny Murray stepping out strongly as a leader – working ... LP, Vinyl record album
ESP, 1964. Near Mint-
Seminal ESP work from Albert Ayler – a unique session done as a soundtrack to a short (and weird!) film from experimental director Michael Snow! Mainstream, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold

Jimmy Smith

Root Down
Verve, 1972. Very Good+
Once an overlooked late Verve album, now a solid classic – and easily one of the funkiest albums ever from organist Jimmy Smith! The groove here is far different than the more familiar Jimmy Smith Verve sessions of the 60s – and the tracks open up in a really extended mode – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, 1968. Very Good+
Lean, righteous blowing from the legendary Frank Foster – one of a handful of extremely hip sessions he cut in the 60s under his own name! The album's the only record Foster ever did for Blue Note – and we dare say it's even better than his previous 60s work on Prestige and Impulse ... LP, Vinyl record album

Clyde McPhatter

Clyde
Atlantic, Late 50s. Poor
We'll be the first to admit that for years, we never forgave Clyde McPhatter for leaving The Drifters – but as time has gone on, hearing records like this really have made us appreciate his greatness on his own! A modern soul gem produced by Lenny White! Though White lends a touch of jazzy sophistication to the set, it's a straight up dose of mainstream modern soul, with great ensemble vocals and crisp production over tight songs that should have landed Wax at the top of the radio. Epic, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold

Braziliance!
Warner, 1967. Very Good
One of the most important early albums by Marcos Valle – a set of instrumental tracks recorded with lots of acoustic guitar!
