Imagination

LP (Item 5543) Muse, 1988 — Condition: Near Mint-

A late date for Woody Shaw, but a great one too – a bit more straightforward than some of his more righteous albums of the 70s, but still proof that Shaw is easily one of the greatest trumpeters of his generation! The album's got a laidback sort of feel, and features a fair bit of familiar standards – but Woody and the group do plenty to transform them, especially on the solo spots. Shaw's leading a quintet here – with Steve Turre on trombone, Kirk Lightsey on piano, Ray Drummond on bass, and Carl Allen on drums – and titles include "Steve's Blues", "Dat Dere", "Imagination", "If I Were A Bell", "You & The Night & The Music", and "Stormy Weather".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Setting Standards
Muse, 1983. Near Mint-
A lovely record from Woody – one of his excellent and understated sides from the early 80s, recorded with a quartet that includes Cedar Walton on piano, Buster Williams on bass, and Victor Jones on drums. Woody Shaw & Anthony Braxton

Iron Men
Muse, 1981. Very Good+
Shaw and Braxton are an unlikely pair of fronliners – as one's got a soulful modal style, and the other's a colder modernist – but they work surprisingly well together on this album, which mixes players throughout the album, by adding in Muhal Richard Abrams, Cecil McBee, Arthur Blythe, ... Cindy Blackman

Arcane
Muse, 1988. Near Mint-
An excellent hard bop side from the late 80s, an era when the new "young lions" were getting a lot of press, and some nice recordings were being made with any eye on the future while their feet were firmly planted in tradition. Richard Davis

Harvest
Muse, 1979. Very Good+
A very nice record that bassist Davis did for Muse in the late 70s. As with previous recordings he works closely with fellow bass player Bill Lee. Muse, 1988. Near Mint-
A great late 80s session by trumpeter Wallace Roney – bold, and strongly-blown – proof that he was clearly one of the most striking young trumpet talents of his generation! David Schnitter

Goliath
Muse, 1978. Near Mint-
An overlooked soul jazz treasure from tenorist David Schnitter – recorded with lots of warm tones, and buoyant kind of a Strata East sensibility!
