We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Our Man Flint
20th Century, Mid 60s. Very Good+
Excellent soundtrack work by Jerry Goldsmith – possibly his greatest ever! Jerry's usually a bit staid with some of his scores – but working here on the soundtrack to this James Coburn spy spoof film, he's truly fantastic! The approach mixes strings and bossa-inflected grooves with ... LP, Vinyl record album
Sol Madrid
MGM, Late 60s. Sealed
A pretty darn rare Lalo Schifrin soundtrack – to a lost crime thriller that starred David McCallum, Stella Stevens, and Telly Savalas – all of whom are pictured in a nice collage-type movie painting on the front cover! The tracks run from mellow bossa to fast and jazzy, and the album ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wild In The Streets
Tower, Late 60s. Very Good Gatefold
Hilarious! This is the soundtrack to a goofy late 60s shocker film about the time when hippies and young folks would take over America. Les Baxter handled the musical score for the film, but the real treat is the schlocky rock tracks – written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, with ... LP, Vinyl record album
Outlaw Riders
MGM, 1971. Sealed
MGM goes for the Tower/Sidewalk approach – and turns out an album of shlock rock tunes designed to accompany this b-grade biker film from the early 70s! Simon Stokes sings lead vocals on a number of tracks by The Nighthawks – not a bad backing band, save for Simon's "tuff" ... LP, Vinyl record album
RCA, 1967. Very Good-
Great grooviness from Neal Hefti – working here at the height of his 60s powers! The film stars Robert Morse, Barbara Harris, and Jonathan Winters – and the score's got a 60s screwball approach that mixes organ, woodwinds, percussion, and bits of strings together, all filtered through ... Sacco E Vanzetti
RCA, 1971. Sealed
An unusual period score by Ennio Morricone – and a record that turned out to be one of his most successful of the 70s! The film, as you might guess from the title, is about the famous and unjust trial of Italian-American activists Sacco & Vanzetti – and in keeping with that setting ... LP, Vinyl record album
Music From Mr Lucky
RCA, 1959. Very Good
One of the greatest soundtracks ever from the early years of Henry Mancini – a hip jazzy TV score that we've loved for years! The jazzy theme to "Mr Lucky" is reason enough to buy this album – as it's got these wonderful warm washes of sound, interlayed in a way that makes ... LP, Vinyl record album

To Sir, With Love
Fontana, Late 60s. Very Good-
A pretty groovy soundtrack – one that goes way past the hit! Sure, this one's always been famous for the wonderful track "To Sir With Love" – done here in 3 versions by the young and lovely Lulu, who also starred in the film. But the record's also got some great ... LP, Vinyl record album
United Artists, 1972. Very Good+
A fantastically beautiful record – easily one of Ennio Morricone's dreamiest scores of the 70s! Although the film itself is a western, Morricone's soundtrack is far different than usual – with hardly any traditional western themes at all, and mostly just music that's in that mellow, ...
