A cooker of a live set from Eric Alexander – a performance recorded down in North Carolina, but every bit as great as his New York work! The group here is a quartet of very familiar players – David Hazeltine on piano, John Webber on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums – all working together with that sock-solid quality that makes the Alexander group one of the best classic-styled combos working today in jazz. Though as usual, Eric's the real star of the set – blowing these amazing solos on tenor sax that are filled with life, energy, and soulful creativity – easily some of the greatest work on his instrument in the contemporary generation of American players. The rhythms are wonderful too – often loping and a bit modal – colored warmly with a great sense of tone and sound. Titles include "Blues Like", "One For Steve", "Pearls", "Little Lucas", "We All Love Eddie Harris", and "Some Other Time". DVD features 9 titles in all – 2 more than the CD!  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(There is no region information for this DVD so we assume it is NTSC format, region 1.)

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Wallace Roney

Prototype
High Note, 2004. Used
A nicely electrified set from trumpeter Wallace Roney – working here in a style that has plenty of moody backdrops on Fender Rhodes, plus some really snapping percussion from drummer Eric Allen! There's a sound here that's clearly inspired by 70s Miles, but which also moves through a range ... CD

High Note, 2013. Used
A gem of a record from trumpeter Jeremy Pelt – and like some of his other brilliant albums, a set that really has him sparkling alongside some sweet Fender Rhodes! Pelt's trumpet has always been great – but here, in the company of keyboardist David Bryant, it really seems to find some ... CD

John Coltrane

Lush Life
Prestige/OJC, 1957/1958. Used
Strong work from John Coltrane's early years as a leader – even if the album is sort of a collection of tracks that Trane recorded for Prestige, instead of a discreetly separate session! Side one features Coltrane's tenor in a spare setting with Earl May on bass and Art Taylor on drums ... CD
Blue Note, 1966. Used
No filters here, as Hank Mobley's sound is clean, lean, and right on the money – hitting that newly-sophisticated groove of the Caddy For Daddy years in this sweet unissued set! The date was recorded in the 60s, but unissued by Blue Note for many years – another one of those head-scratc ... CD
Columbia, 1957. Used
A masterful meeting of two 50s modern jazz talents – the trumpet of Miles Davis balanced with the arrangements of Gil Evans – with results that have made the album one of Miles' greatest ever! The sound here is completely sublime – as Davis gets all chromatic and spooky over ... CD

Mahavishnu Orchestra

Birds Of Fire
Columbia, 1972. Used
A great second album from Mahavishnu Orchestra – one that has them still very might in the same tight formation as the first! As before, there's a heck of a lot of power here – monstrous work on drums from Billy Cobham, sharp-edged guitar from John McLaughlin, and a range of great ... CD
