Jimmy & Wes – The Dynamic Duo

CD (Item 552465) Verve/Polygram, 1966 — Condition: Used
$2.99 ...

CD

A really wonderful album in the Verve Records catalog of the 60s – a set that's not only a fantastic meeting between two superstar jazz musicians, with Jimmy Smith on Hammond and Wes Montgomery on guitar – but one that also takes things in a whole groovy new dimension, thanks to the arrangements of Oliver Nelson! Nelson is at his soulful best here – working on hard-swinging charts that almost seem to liberate Jimmy and Wes to do even more with their solos – really stretching out, with an especially great sound from Smith on the organ – maybe at a level that makes the record one of his best of all time for Verve! Titles include "James & Wes", "Night Train", "13 (Death March)", and "Down By The Riverside".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(1984 pressing.)

Used CD Grade

We use the all-encompassing grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or packaging details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the CD. This might include, but isn't limited to, scratches, tracks that skip, case/insert damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Kenny Burrell

Night Song
Verve (Japan), 1968. Used
A great title for this one – as the album's got a cool, laidback groove that's very much in a "night song" mode! Arrangements are by Don Sebesky – in that warm and fluid mode he was bringing to some of his best CTI sides at the time – and they push guitarist Kenny ... CD
Verve, 1955. Used
One of Basie's biggest albums – but still a work of pure genius! "April In Paris" is one of the darkest jazz standards ever written, and it never sounded better than in this original version, which features that great ending in which Basie and the band stop, then start, then stop ... CD

Illinois Jacquet & Ben Webster

Kid & The Brute
Verve, Mid 50s. Used
The title's a bit misleading – as a number of the tracks on here were recorded by Jacquet, and Webster only sat in on two longer jamming numbers – "I Wrote This For The Kid" and "The Kid & The Brute". Not that that's a problem – as those long numbers take ... CD
Verve (Japan), 1966. Used
Ostensibly simple stuff from Bill Evans, but pretty darn great – and a nice move into a more sophisticated vein than his earlier recordings! The album has him working with bassist Eddie Gomez, a hugely talented bassist that would be one of Bill's best partners during this period, and a ... CD
Verve, 1999. Used
A two part album with both a studio and a live set, with Roy Haynes accompanied by Danilo Perez on piano and John Patitucci on bass. CD

Randy Weston & Melba Liston

Volcano Blues
Verve/Gitanes, 1993. Used
Randy plays beautifully on a set of blues-inspired tracks arranged by Melba Liston – working with horn players that include Teddy Edwards, Benny Powell, Wallace Roney, and Hamiet Bluiett to come up with some really striking tunes that differ greatly from a lot of his other classic work! ... CD

Gene Ammons & Sonny Stitt

Boss Tenors
Verve, 1961. Used
Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt go head to head in this classic album of tracks that perfectly captures the joy and fury of their live performances from years before! The record was cut in Chicago with a very hard rhythm section that includes John Houston on piano, Charles Williams on bass, and George ... CD

Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Stitt, Sonny Rollins

Sonny Side Up (Verve Master Edition)
Verve, 1957. Used
A great little blowing session for Verve – one that has Dizzy Gillespie working here with two different "Sonnys" – Sonny Stitt and Sonny Rollins, both of whom play tenor on the set! The tracks here are all quite long and open – more loose vehicles for extended soloing ... CD

Jan Lundgren

European Standards
Act/Video Arts (Japan), 2009. Used
Jan Lundgren plays both acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes here – taking on a host of very groovy tunes from the European scene of the 60s onwards – including some great soundtrack numbers, and a few surprising jazz takes on pop cuts as well! The album's got a subtle, soulful vibe ... CD
