Tito Puente (Otra)

LP (Item 552177) Otra, 1950s — Condition: Near Mint-
Includes "Ti Mon Bo", "Tu No Eres Nadie", "Guayara", "Cuando Suenanlos Tambores", "Cha-Kee-Ta", "Sacala", "Rogelio, No Aprietes Mas", "Four Beat Cha Cha", "Chang", and "Candido".  © 1996-2022, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover and labels have some notes in pen.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

RCA (Venezuela), Mid 60s. Near Mint-
A unique Venezuelan album by Tito Puente – and one of the best we've heard from his years for RCA! The groove here is very hard – very deserving of the "Mas Dance Mania" in the title – and there's a strong Cuban groove that really drives most of the tunes, with Tito's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tito Puente

20th Anniversary
Tico, Late 60s. Very Good
A great compilation of Tito's work for the Tico label – put together in celebration of his 20 years in show biz, and mostly featuring tunes recorded around the time of the release of the record. The set contains some great 60s groovers – and titles include "Loco De Amor", ... LP, Vinyl record album
Tico, 1958. Very Good
Tight groovy cha cha tracks by Tito, recorded with more edge than his similar stuff for RCA, and presented here in a reissue of a record that's darn rare in the original (we've never seen a copy!) Tito's joined by vocalist Pepe Luis, and the set list includes nice ones like "Cha Cha ... LP, Vinyl record album
RCA, 1957. Very Good+
It's easy to cha cha when Tito Puente's in the house – especially when he's working in his near-perfect RCA mode of the late 50s! The tunes are nothing fancy, but the execution is sublime – tight Latin rhythms at the bottom, done in a way that's never too bombastic – topped with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Latin All Stars

Amore Cha Cha & Merengue
Roper, 1973. Near Mint-
One of the obscure Latin sets on the Roper label – originally done for dance instruction, but pretty great overall – with one side of cha cha tracks, the other of merengue! LP, Vinyl record album
Fania, 1972. Near Mint-
A Latin soul party – beyond compare! The album's a completely wonderful live set that really captures the energy, excitement, and warm sociability of the hip New York scene at the end of the 60s. The music is stunning – a freewheeling blend of jazz, soul, and Latin themes – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chico O'Farrill

Married Well
Verve, 1967. Near Mint-
The great Latin big band arrangements of Chico O'Farrill meet the groovy production of late-60's Verve – and the result is an excellent album of groovy instrumentals that just won't quit! Chico's arranging skills are still in excellent shape here – and they're augmented by some very ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mongo Santamaria

Red Hot
Tappan Zee, 1979. Very Good+ Gatefold
A great Bob James-directed session from Mongo Santamaria – and a set that takes the fusion-inflected Latin work he was doing on the Vaya label, and blends it with an even tighter, sharper CTI Records vibe! The approach is a bit like that combination of underground Latin and larger label ... LP, Vinyl record album
