Kenton Showcase - The Music of Bill Russo and Bill Holman

LP (Item 5521) Capitol, 1955 — Condition: Very Good+

One of the best Kenton LPs ever, and one that really shows the band's beautiful blend of avant garde playing with a swinging jazz sensibility. A 12" LP release of two 10" albums – one showcasing the arranging style of Bill Russo, the other of Bill Holman. Both sides are excellent, and filled with fantastic material played by Lee Konitz, Charlie Mariano, and other Kenton modernists. If you've ever wondered why the Kenton band was so great, check this one out. Tracks include "A Theme For Four Values", "Blues Before And After", "Bags" and "Hav A Havana".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has light wear.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Stan Kenton

Kenton In Hi-Fi
Capitol, 1956. Very Good+
Easily the most successful album that Stan Kenton ever recorded – a brilliant reworking of older Kenton band standards, done with the dynamics of the 50s hi fi scene! The album's a much-needed one to any fan of Stan's genius – as the tunes are presented here in recordings that really ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stan Kenton

Fire, Fury & Fun
Creative World, 1974. Near Mint-
A hokey title, but a nice little set – one of Stan's under-rated cookers for his own Creative World label from the 70s! The tracks are all long, fresh, and warmly chromatic – a bit funky at times, and kind of a 70s take on the Kenton style of earlier years – pushing the solos ... LP, Vinyl record album
Capitol, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold
A totally great set by Cannonball Adderley – one of his funkiest albums ever, recorded live at Operation Breadbasket under the supervision of Jesse Jackson, and a session in which the band is cooking a lot more than on some of their other albums from the time! Billy Taylor

Midnight Piano
Capitol, Mid 60s. Sealed
A really great album from Billy Taylor – way fresher than most of his other records of the time, especially his trio work! The main reason for this is Oliver Nelson – who crafts some incredibly soulful backings for Billy on the album's tracks, twisting through soul jazz big band ... LP, Vinyl record album

Voyage To Uranus
Capitol, 1974. Near Mint-
