All The King's Songs

LP (Item 552024) Coral, 1959 — Condition: Near Mint-
The title tells the story of the album's concept – as Teddi King pays tribute to a dozen male "kings" of music – including Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Dick Haymes, and Billy Eckstine! The tunes are all signature numbers by each of the male stars – redone by Teddi here with a female twist, and set to backings by Lew Douglas and Johnny Richards – both of whom give Teddi some of the best support of her 50s career. Richards' backings are especially great – nicely dynamic, in a way that breaks past some of Teddi's sleepier qualities – and even on the mellower numbers, the King vocals are in full force, sung with even more promise than on previous albums for RCA. Titles include "Flamingo", "Unforgettable", "April Showers", "A Cottage For Sale", "This Love Of Mine", "Keeping Out Of Mischief Now", and "Temptation".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(80s Spanish pressing.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

RCA, 1955. Near Mint-
Sweet 50s vocals from Teddi King – a set that's arranged with a fuller style than her small combo sessions from the time – but which still shows her to be one of the most distinctive singers of her time! Teddi's got a voice that's much richer than you'd guess from her small frame ... LP, Vinyl record album

Now In Vogue
Storyville, 1955. Near Mint-
One of a number of great small group sessions done by singer Teddi King for the Storyville label – nicely relaxed, with backing from a septet that features Billy Taylor on piano, Bob Brookmeyer on trombone, Nick Travis on trumpet, and Gene Quill on alto! The Storyville approach really brings ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chris Connor & Maynard Ferguson

Two's Company
Roulette, 1961. Near Mint-
Despite any prejudice you might have against Maynard Ferguson, he actually does a damn good job backing up Chris Connor's lovely voice on this record – probably because his band is super-hip, and includes players like Jaki Byard, Joe Farrell, and Rufus Jones. Connor is in fine icy form, as ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cab Calloway

Hi De Hi De Ho
RCA, 1960. Sealed
A later recording by Cab – but pretty darn great! The tunes are all done in the style of his famous work from the 30s – hard-swinging, and with lots of clever twists and turns on the vocals that keep even the familiar numbers on edge. Cab's orchestra provides the backings, and the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Michael Franks

Burchfield Nines
Warner, 1978. Near Mint-
Great songs, great vocals, great instrumentation, and another late 70s classic from Michael Franks – one of the few mainstream masters of understatement in his generation! As on all his best albums, the style here is a subtle blend of jazz and pop with a bit of a Brazilian inspiration – ... LP, Vinyl record album
John Hammond, Early 70s. Near Mint- Gatefold
Later issue of the first album from Michael Franks – and a bit different than his later hits at Warner! The trademark Frank sound is definitely in place here – well-penned tunes, sung with cool compressed vocals and a slight jazzy tinge – but there's also a bit more of a folksy ... Ella At Duke's Place
Verve, 1965. Near Mint- Gatefold
A beautiful classic from mid 60s Verve – and the kind of a session that we wouldn't have expected to come off so well! Kenny Rankin

Like A Seed
Little David, 1972. Near Mint-
Indescribably beautiful work from Kenny Rankin – a jazzy blend of vocals and folk – delivered with a warm and soulful tone that's unlike anyone else! Verve, 1958. Near Mint-
A nice one from Ella – and a good move past the Songbooks mode that sometimes dogged her years on Verve a bit too much!
