CD

A masterpiece from Bilal – the record we knew he had in him all this time since 1st Born Second came out nearly a decade prior! Earlier in his career, Bilal was one of those distinct voices you'd hear assisting myriad singers and MCs on their singles, someone you knew should be a superstar in his own right. Whether or not he ever reaches that status in popularity or in financial rewards, here he's delivered what might be the soul/R&B album of the year for 2010. We'd hasten to compare him to anyone else out there, but there's a boundless sense of creativity that begs comparison to Erykah Badu, in spirit if not in the sound. Much of the album is co-produced by Steve Mckie, with live instrumentation that gives it a funky psychedelic soul feel: live drums, beats and effects, Moog, keys, synths, guitars and bass. The other collaborators in the production booth – Shafiq Husayn, Nottz, 88 Keys – all clearly share Bilal's vision, as we hear nothing that sounds like a concession to anything or anyone. Lyrically, Bilal deals with matters of grave importance and more intimate personal truths, but the adventurousness and soulfulness of the music give it all a unified feel. We could go on and on about this one, kids. Don't pass it up! Includes "Cake & Eat It Too", "Restart", "All Matter", "Flying", "Levels", "Little One", "Move On", "Robots", "The Dollar", "Who Are You" and "Think Over".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Interscope, 2001. Used
Debut full length from the singer we've heard on everybody else's cuts. The tracks bump along nicely, with a slightly harder vibe than most other Nusoul and certainly any radio-friendly R&B these days on a number of tracks, especially those produced by Dre, though the Soulquarians and Rafael ... Brandon Williams

XII
Soulasis, 2014. Used
A hell of a record from keyboardist and producer Brandon Williams – an artist who may well be the Larry Mizell of the 21st Century! Like Mizell, Brandon's a hell of a musician at the core – really strong and soulful on his work here – but also like Larry, Williams really has a ... CD
Sound Of Everything (UK), 2015. Used
A stunning little set – one we fell in love with from the very first note! The collection is wonderful – some of the freshest underground soul we've heard in years – almost a re-lighting of the UK fire that burned so strongly a few years ago – but with a very vibrant new ... CD
Ropeadope, 2017. Used
The cover's got a couple of monkeys playing the music – but the sound here actually comes from bothers Mike and Aaron Dolton – the first of whom plays the drums, the latter who seems to handle just about everything else! Their music is a blend of jazz and soul – sometimes with ... CD

RC & The Gritz just keep getting better and better with each new record – to the point where they've found a way to fully state their own sound, yet work with a sort of generosity that opens up the door for plenty of great collaborations! That's definitely the case here – as the ... CD

Peven Everett

Latest Craze Part 1
Studio Confessions, 2005. Used
Sweet homespun space soul by wunderkind Peven Everett – transcending the neo soul scene into a hugely grooving world of his own! As with the best of his other records, Peven's way of spiraling a fairly basic groove into something HUGE is nothing short of amazing. The tunes here have a ... CD
Universal, 2011. Used

Naive (France), 2010. Used
A boundary skirting set of catchy soul from Asa – a Nigerian-born, Paris-based singer with a sound that's timelessly crafted and easy to love – ranging from rave up pop soul to more delicately layered and stripped down! Asa has just a bit of gravel in her voice, which works great and ... CD

Virgin, 2003. Used
A sparkling debut from Detroit's Dwele – a sweet vocalist in the Donny Hathaway tradition, but with a tight, beat heavy soul sound that glides between 70s soul jazz, mellowed-out Jay Dee synth hop groove, and the natural soul vibe ?uestlove brings to his productions! We first caught wind of ... CD
