Reevaluations – The Impluse Years

LP (Item 551332) Impulse, Early 60s — Condition: Very Good+
2LP Gatefold

...

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Coleman Hawkins

Genius Of Coleman Hawkins
Verve, 1957. Near Mint-
Not a best-of, as you might guess from the title – but a really special set of late work from Hawkins – shorter numbers, but played with plenty of flair with a small combo that also includes Oscar Peterson on piano, Ray Brown on bass, Herb Ellis on guitar, and Alvin Stoller on drums! LP, Vinyl record album
Riverside/Milestone, Mid 40s/1957. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A nice set that brings together Hawk Flies High plus earlier material from 78s! The core record is a key album in the reintroduction of Coleman Hawkins in the late 50s – recorded in a style that still bears a lot of traces of earlier years, but at a time when Hawk was being claimed as a key ... Prestige, Late 50s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A great collection – one that features a side of material from the album Soul, with piano by Ray Bryant; and another side of a set recorded with the Red Garland Trio. Also features the full album At Ease – wonderful late work by Coleman Hawkins – a player who was very much " ... LP, Vinyl record album
Musidisc (France), Late 50s. Near Mint-
Fantastic work from Hawkins – recorded for a small label at a time when his star had fallen a bit, but with some AMAZING tone that really makes the album cook! Coleman Hawkins

Desafinado
Impulse, 1964. Very Good+
The Hawk, in prime late form, lays down some beautiful tenor solos over gentle bossa nova accompaniment – working in a mode that's much more satisfying than just a "classic player meets bossa" session, angularly crafting the solos with that dark edge that he had in all of his later ... CBS (France), 1930s. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
A great collection of rare material by Hawk, put together by Henri Renaud for CBS France. The set features tracks recorded in a number of different settings – with The Chocolate DAndies, Red McKenzie's Mound City Blue Blowers, Benny Goodman, Jack Purvis Orchestra, Count Basie, and Hawkins' ... Zoot Sims

Waiting Game
Impulse, 1966. Near Mint- Gatefold
A rare gem from Zoot Sims – very different than any of his other albums! The session features Zoot blowing over large backings arranged and conducted by Gary McFarland, a bit in the older Verve "with strings" mode, but also sparkling with a lot of the newer elements that McFarland ... Shirley Scott

Girl Talk
Impulse, 1967. Near Mint- Gatefold
Sweet 60s grooves from Shirley Scott – really working the Hammond organ here with a wonderful sound – that warm, lean, soulful groove she hit perfectly at Impulse Records! There's a clarity here you don't get on some of Shirley's other records – a really stripped-down sound on ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Love Supreme
Impulse, 1964. Very Good+ Gatefold
Maybe one of the greatest jazz albums of all time – a real breakthrough moment for the legendary John Coltrane, and the blueprint for generations of jazz records to come! Trane was already breaking down plenty of boundaries before Love Supreme – but he knocked it out of the park for ... LP, Vinyl record album

Archie Shepp

Live In San Francisco
Impulse, 1966. Near Mint- Gatefold
A great counterpart to some of Archie Shepp's studio albums for Impulse – a live date recorded in San Francisco, with a slightly freer, sharper edge! The sound is almost free at times, but always with that strong sense of focus that Archie brought to his brilliant work of the time – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1960s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Truly the best of the best of Coltrane's years at Impulse – as the collection has a strong focus on the longer, more spiritual numbers that he was free to develop while working for the forward-thinking company. The set's stuffed with great numbers – and includes classics like "Afri ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1963. Near Mint- Gatefold
A surprisingly enchanting album of piano work from Charles Mingus – one of a few he cut on the instrument, and quite different than his regular work on bass! Unlike the bold, angry role that Mingus would take on as a leader, the approach here is very personal and introspective – long ... LP, Vinyl record album
