Nice Place To Be

LP (Item 550766) MCA, 1986 — Condition: Sealed
(Shrink has a hype sticker.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Best Of Count Basie

Joe Sample

Voices In The Rain
MCA, 1980. Near Mint- Gatefold
Joe Sample's sitting at a grand piano on the cover, and that image is a nice tip-off to the sound within – an approach that has Joe hitting some more sophisticated acoustic passages at points, while still opening up into the soulful groove we'd expect from his legacy as a core member of The ... Deodato

Artistry
MCA, 1974. Near Mint-
A live set from Deodato – but one that's very much in the mode of his best CTI studio sessions – with soaring, over the top keyboard work that's totally great – backed by some tightly compressed guitar, bass, and drums, with just enough funk in the mix to keep things interesting! ... Deodato

Whirlwinds
MCA, 1974. Near Mint- Gatefold
Sweet keyboard soul from Deodato – a set that steps off nicely from the strengths of his big hits on CTI, hitting a similarly flowing groove that's really great! The instrumentation here is a bit more expanded than before, but never in a way that buries the keyboards – and Deodato's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Solution

Cordon Bleu
Rocket/MCA, 1975. Near Mint-
A pretty nice set of 70s fusion – rock-influenced at times, but still pretty spare, jazzy, and with some nice funky moments! The best tracks are the ones in which the band kicks back and opens up over a jam – stretching out with some spacious work on guitar, sax, and keyboards – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Charlie Rouse

Cinnamon Flower
Douglas, 1977. Very Good+
A great later effort from tenor sax giant Charlie Rouse – a record that's quite different than his 50s hardbop or his 60s modernist work with Thelonious Monk – but still pretty darn great in its own sort of way! The album features Rouse working with a larger ensemble in a batch of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Al Cohn

Sax Section
Epic, Late 50s. Very Good+
Al Cohn leads a host of great sax players like Gene Quill, Sol Schlinger, Phil Bodner, and Zoot Sims through a set of tight arrangements that have nice little openings for searing solos by the stars. There's a lot of tracks (including "Shazam", "Shutout", "Villa ... LP, Vinyl record album
