Doo Wop Ballads Vol 2

LP (Item 550650) Rhino, Late 50s — Condition: Near Mint-

(Cover has a cut corner.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Stax, 1966. Very Good+
A great Memphis sound from the second greatest instrumental group on Stax next to Booker T & The MGs – heard here on a massive record that really pushes The Mar-Keys to the next level! Ronn, Late 60s. Near Mint-
A landmark bit of southern soul from the great Toussaint McCall – a wonderfully talented singer, songwriter, and organist – every bit as great as Otis Redding, James Carr, and other southern soul great of the 60s! Kool & The Gang

Love & Understanding
Dee-Lite, 1976. Very Good+ Gatefold
Amazing work from Kool & The Gang – from a period when they were pushing past their tight early funky sound, into a super-dope mix of electronics and spacey jamming that is still pretty darn revolutionary today! Although you might think the album would be a bit disco by the date, it's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Garnet Mimms & The Enchanters

Cry Baby & 11 Other Hits
United Artists, 1965. Near Mint-
An excellent early Garnet Mimms LP on United Artists – one of the few albums he recorded (period!), and cut featuring vocal backings by his group The Enchanters. We looooove Garnet's vocals to death, rank them up there with the best of the 60s underground – singers like Darrell Banks ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chuck Jackson

Through All Times
ABC, 1973. Near Mint-
Lost bit of soul by Chuck Jackson, recorded in LA in the early 70s, between his Wand hit years, and his later stuff on All Platinum. The sound is sort of a rootsy studio soul sound, if that makes any sense – but some of the tracks are also a bit funky. There's a great sample on the cut ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sam Dees

Show Must Go On
Atlantic, 1975. Near Mint-
The only full album ever recorded by the legendary Sam Dees – an artist who's probably best known for his songwriting skills on other records, but who really shines here as a lead star on his own! Dees' approach is wonderful – a bit rootsy, with some slight southern soul elements ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shirley Brown

Woman To Woman
Truth, 1974. Near Mint-
Easily one of the top 5 female southern soul albums of the 70s – a landmark record that Shirley Brown never matched again! The record's got an open, honest quality that's far deeper than even other work from the time on Stax Records – a style that's partly Memphis, but which also has ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, Late 50s. Near Mint-
One of the first full albums by the legendary Drifters – all early material cut for Atlantic Records in the immediate years after Clyde McPhatter left the group, and the quintet opened up into a wonderful second chapter of their career! Some tunes still have that raspy lead vocal standout ... LP, Vinyl record album

Etta James

Etta James (1962)
Argo, 1962. Very Good+
Unlike some of her other early recordings, which tend to be raw screamin' R&B, this album's a beautiful set of ballads and weepers with arrangements by Riley Hampton, who also did stunning work like this for Lorez Alexandria and Walter Jackson. You might be tempted to call the album a sell-out ... LP, Vinyl record album
RCA, 1972. Near Mint-
A wicked lost album of righteous funk and poetic knowledge from the great Gary Byrd! Gary began his life as a soul DJ in New York, but by the early 70s, he was using his rich voice to create recordings designed to educate as much as entertain. That said, the album is as funky as it is strident, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cal Tjader

Warm Wave
Verve, Mid 60s. Sealed Gatefold
A mighty nice pairing – the vibes of Cal Tjader and the sophisticated arrangements of Claus Ogerman – who definitely ensures that the album's the warm wave promised in the title!
