Toots Thielemans Live

LP (Item 550169) Inner City, 1982 — Condition: Near Mint-
Originally: 9.99
A wonderful live date from the legendary Toots Thielemans – and one that's got some especially nice electric piano interplay with his famous guitar and harmonica! There's a bit more of an edge to this record than some of Toots' more polished outings for bigger labels – and we really appreciate that quality of the record, as it gets back to that fresh, unique tone that Thielemans first brought to jazz in the 50s and 60s – which on other records of this vintage wasn't always recorded with this much soul. Players include Rob Franken on keyboards and Joop Scholten on guitar – and titles include "Waltz For Sonny", "That Misty Red Animal", "Blue Lady", "Bluesette", "C To G Jam Blues", "Dirty Old Man", and "Nice To Be Around".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Dutch Polydor pressing in a black border cover, bent a bit at the top left corner and spine.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Sadao Watanabe with the Great Jazz Trio

I'm Old Fashioned
Inner City, 1976. Very Good+
A surprising title – given that Sadao Watanabe was really stretching out a lot in the early 70s – but a fitting one too, as the set's a nice back-to-basics date from the amazing Japanese saxophonist! Sadao's working here with the Great Jazz Trio of Hank Jones on piano, Ron Carter on ... LP, Vinyl record album
Inner City, 1976. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
One of Sun Ra's best non-Saturn live sets of the 70s – a nice little record that shows the group mixing it up with equal parts avant garde and straight ahead jazz, all handled in that ever-growing large group style that made them a real force to be reckoned with in a concert setting! The ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sun Ra

Cosmos
Inner City, 1976. Sealed
One of the best-remembered Sun Ra albums from the 70s – a really cool little session that features Ra playing the unusual "rocksichord" all the way through! The instrument's a very weird one – kind of like a messed-up electric piano, with lots of cool broken notes and a weird ... LP, Vinyl record album
Inner City, 1978. Near Mint-
LP...$9.99 14.99
An obscure 70s trio session from pianist Tommy Flanagan – and one that really gets at the full depths of his lyrical talents on the keys! As the title implies, the session features Tommy working through a host of Harold Arlen standards – all familiar numbers, but performed here with a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Three (Joe Sample, Ray Brown, Shelly Manne)

Three
Inner City, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold
Quite possibly one of the most successful Japanese piano trio recordings of the 70s – a super-session performed by a group that includes Joe Sample on acoustic piano, Ray Brown on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums! Given that Sample's best known during the era for his electric keys with the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wayne Shorter

Moto Grosso Feio
Blue Note, 1970. Very Good+
A perfect illustration of the rich new directions Wayne Shorter was taking at the start of the 70s – an amazing flurry of sounds and styles that's light years ahead of where he began in the 60s! Shorter's one of those players who was already great at the start – an amazing tenorist, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Eddie Lockjaw Davis

Smokin'
Prestige, 1963. Very Good+
The title's certainly right – as the set's a smoker of a record from the mighty Eddie Lockjaw Davis – really hitting his best groove here, and opening up on tunes that are even stronger than his classic Cookbook material! The group includes Shirley Scott on Hammond, and Jerome ... LP, Vinyl record album

Robin Kenyatta

Terra Nova
Altantic, 1973. Very Good+
A cool bit of funk from reedman Robin Kenyatta – slightly electric, and often with a bit of an angular groove – almost a South African influence at times, although warmed up with a good dose of American soul as well! Most numbers here have some sort of keyboards – either from Pat ... LP, Vinyl record album

Grant Green

Green Is Beautiful
Blue Note, 1970. Very Good+
A funky nugget from the second Blue Note chapter of guitarist Grant Green – that wonderful point when he shifted into more funk-based styles from his hardbop work at the start – and found a way to unlock a whole new side of his talents! The approach here is similar to some of the funky ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, Early 50s. Near Mint-

Atlantic, 1977. Very Good+
Eddie moving into a righteous funk vein – but still keeping things nice and electric! Sarah McLawler & Richard Otto

We Bring You Love
Vee Jay, Late 50s. Near Mint-
A strange little record that's indicative of some of the unusual musical practices that were living side by side in a city like Chicago during the postwar years! McLawler and Otto play organ and violin, respectively – and they have a style that mixes jazz with kind of a classier instrumental ... LP, Vinyl record album
