Ellingtonia Moods & Blues

LP (Item 549613) RCA (France), 1960 — Condition: Very Good+
One of the best small-group sessions recorded by Paul Gonsalves – a session with a clear Ellington orientation, as you'd expect from a lineup that includes Johnny Hodges, Jimmy Jones, Ray Nance, and Oliver Jackson. Tracks have a much more relaxed and open-ended feeling than some of Duke's work – giving Hodges, Nance, and Gonsalves plenty of room to open up on their solos. Titles include "The Lineup", "Chocataw", "DA Blues", and "Way Way Back".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Early 70s issue. Cover has some ringwear, bent corners and spine, and a name in pen in back.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

The strong tenor work of Lew Tabackin is featured with the Japanese big band of Toshiyuki Miayama and His New Herd – a mostly acoustic outfit that has a complicated sound that's not unlike some of the big band aggregations that Tabackin has led with wife Toshiko Akioshi, but perhaps a bit ... One of the Direct Cutting audiophile recordings made during the 70's, pressed up on Japanese vinyl, and pressed so that it needs to be played at 45 rpm for maximum fidelity. Impulse, Mid 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold
Wonderfully groovy work from drummer Chico Hamilton – one of his hip 60s albums for Impulse, done in a style that's completely different than his work of the 50s!
