A 2-fer that brings together two classic 50s sessions by the pair! First up is Trumpet Battle – and before you ask, the cover doesn't feature pictures of these guys whacking each other over their heads with trumpets! Instead, the set's one of those Verve relaxed jam session ones – with long tracks that let the two main soloists work out against each other, not really battling, but trading lines like the confident leaders they are. Rhythm is by Oscar Peterson, Herb Ellis, Louis Bellson, and Ray Brown – and tracks include "Sometimes I'm Happy", "I've Found A New Baby", "I Can't Get Started", and a long "Ballad Medley", which has the trumpeters taking a track at a time, switching off one to one. Next is Trumpet Kings – in which Diz and Roy come together in a nice blend of two traditions – blowing in a relaxed mode that's less of the "battle" you might expect from the title – and more of a friendly exchange of solos, recorded in the open and laidback style of Verve at the time. The group features Oscar Peterson on piano, Herb Ellis on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and Louis Bellson on drums – and Dizzy himself even vocalizes a bit on the set! Tracks are mostly longish, with plenty of solo space, and the the album features 5 tracks that include "Blue Moon", "Limehouse Blues", "Trumpet Blues", "Algo Bueno", and "Pretty Eyed Baby".  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Exciting Gene Krupa
Clef/Verve, Early 50s. Very Good
Despite the fact that he was a showy bombastic drummer in his big band days, during the early 50s, Gene Krupa made some fantastic small group sessions – and this is one of them! The record features two different groups – one with the great Willie Smith on alto, the other with Ben ... LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, 1963. Very Good
A surprisingly great meeting between Kenny Burrell and Jimmy Smith – and a set that's one of Jimmy's standout small combo sessions for Verve! The feel here is much more Jimmy Smith at Blue Note than some of the bigger group Verve dates of the 60s – and Kenny Burrell's sensitive guitar ... LP, Vinyl record album

Warm Wave
Verve, Mid 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
Warm mellow moody vibes from Cal Tjader, in a great setting for his vibes – with nice sweet orchestrations by Claus Ogerman, who gives the whole thing a nice deep Euro 60's feel! Flip Wails
Verve, Early 50s. Very Good
Classic work by one of the biggest players of the early Verve years – the incredible Flip Phillips, a very swinging tenor player! The album's got Flip working with a larger group – billed as an "orchestra", but really a septet, with players that include Bill Harris, Billy ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Hodge
Verve, 1961. Very Good
One of the first Verve albums to push Johnny Hodges away from Ellington and into the soul jazz mode that served him well as a leader in the 60s – recorded here with Wild Bill Davis on organ, Sam Jones on bass, Louis Hayes on drums, and the great Les Spann on both guitar and flute! Spann's ... LP, Vinyl record album
Along Comes Cal
Verve, Late 60s. Very Good
Great stuff – and very very groovy! Cal cut this record for Verve during the height of his swinging 60s Latin years – and he's working here with arranger Chico O'Farrill, who at the time, was perfectly suited for Cal's short, jaunty approach to a groove! The album's filled with nice ... LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, 1964. Very Good+ Gatefold
A real treasure, and a record that may well be our favorite Jimmy Smith album for Verve – a masterful meeting of his smoking Hammond work with some swingingly sophisticated arrangements by Oliver Nelson and Claus Ogerman! Verve, 1968. Very Good+
A really unusual little record for Jimmy Smith – and a set that actually features a bit of singing alongside his usual work on the Hammond! Verve, 1959. Very Good
Cole Porter's tunes are great enough on their own, but Oscar really opens them up on this set – picking up the inherent rhythms in the numbers and really working them over – in a way that makes the outing one of the most lively in Peterson's songbook series for Verve! Oscar's fluid ... LP, Vinyl record album
Stan Getz At Large

A tremendous start to the 60s for the legendary Stan Getz – a unique double-length album recorded in Copenhagen – and filled with some of his best work on record to date!
