❔
A key later album from alto saxophonist Benny Carter – one that has him at the helm of a largeish group, but playing with a nicely focused sort of groove! In addition to Benny's alto, the record also features tenor sax from Charlie Rouse and Coleman Hawkins, plus one more alto from Phil Woods – supported by rhythm from John Collins on guitar, Dick Katz on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Jo Jones on drums. The tunes are traditional, but have some sharper-edged modern ideas on some of the solos – and there's a nicely echoey feel to the production, which further adds to the quality of the record. The album's a bit like a Swingville session for Prestige, but has a bit more going on – and titles include "Doozy", "Blue Star", "Midnight Sun Will Never Set", and "Crazy Rhythm". CD also features a full bonus album – the record Additions To Further Definitions!  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Impulse (Japan), 1966. Used
A great example of the cool, classy swing that Benny Carter hit in the 1960s – a groove that was more regularly brought to backings for standout singers of the time, but which also works beautifully here in an instrumental mode! Carter's alto sax is at the top of the charts, but the album's ... CD

Sonny Rollins

East Broadway Run Down
Impulse, 1966. Used
One of the most free-wheeling Sonny Rollins albums of the 60s – an album that features some very long, extended tracks that really break out from some of the straighter moments of Sonny's mid-60s recordings! The title track is an incredible 20 minute workout – one that almost feels ... CD
Impulse, 1963. Used
Soaring and soulful work from the legendary John Coltrane – a tremendous live set that's one of his best early 60s albums! The groove is open and free – filled with pulsating modal rhythms, and handled with a slightly more relaxed feeling than some of Trane's studio work from the same ... CD

Antonio Hart

Here I Stand
Impulse, 1997. Used
A quartet date with Antonio Hart on alto and soprano sax, John Benitez on bass, James Hurt on piano and organ, and Nasheet Waits on drums. CD
Impulse, 1961. Used
Killer stuff by Art Blakey – one of his few non-Blue Note sessions from the time, and a hard-wailing set that features the Jazz Messengers as a sextet! The format is one that flourished briefly in these early 60s years – and in this case, the already great lineup of Lee Morgan on ... CD
Impulse, 1965. Used
A fantastic addition to the John Coltrane catalog, and a set that's wonderful for so many different reasons it's hard to fit them all in one short passage! As the title implies, the album features a rare live performance of "Love Supreme" – done in 1965, when the work was new both ... CD
Impulse, 1966. Used
John Coltrane returns to the Village Vanguard – but his sound here is a lot more far-reaching than a few years before! The album's a great counterpart to the first Vanguard session – as it takes all of the bold, soaring energy of that date, and balances it with the newly introspective ... CD

Horace Silver

Hardbop Grandpop
Impulse, 1996. Used
A surprisingly great later album from Horace – with Steve Turre on trombone, Ronnie Cuber on baritone, Claudio Roditi on trumpet, and Michael Brecker on tenor. CD
Impulse, 1966. Used 2 CDs
Essential stuff! This 2 CD set includes the entirety of Albert Ayler's Live In Greenwich Village album – plus a huge amount of previously unreleased live material, played by the Ayler group in New York, during 1966 and 1967. Ayler's brother Don is on trumpet, and other players include Joel ... CD

Cecil Taylor Unit/Roswell Rudd Sextet

Mixed
Impulse, 1961/1966. Used
A fantastic set – and one that didn't exist in this way during the vinyl years of Impulse Records! The package provides important early work from these two musicians who'd go onto shape the avant side of jazz in the 60s – three tracks that Cecil Taylor recorded with Gil Evans for the ... CD

Milt Jackson & Ray Brown

That's The Way It Is
Impulse/Victor (Japan), 1969. Used
At the end of the 60s, Milt Jackson and Ray Brown cut some very groovy records together – teamed up in a great pairing of styles that pushed both of them way past the more standard sounds of earlier years! This album's one of the best of the bunch – as it features pianist Monty ... CD
