❔
One of the greatest jazz soundtracks of all time! Elmer Bernstein wrote the score to Otto Preminger's chilling film version of Nelson Algren's book The Man With The Golden Arm – a sad tale of jazz, gambling, and heroin addiction on the streets of Chicago (not far from Dusty Groove, in fact!) – and in doing so, he came up with one of the first jazz soundtracks to really work strongly with a dramatic narrative. The film's striking theme is played in a number of variations, either with orchestral backing, or in small combo format by Shorty Rogers & His Giants, a crack west coast group that features work by Bud Shank, Shelly Manne, Bob Cooper, and Pete Candoli. The tracks work perfectly together as a suite of tracks, even without the images of the film – telling a tale of temptation, sadness, tragedy, and rebirth. Titles include "Clark Street", "Breakup", "The Fix", "Zosh", "Frankie Machine", and "Audition". Worth the price for the Saul Bass cover alone!  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(60s stereo pressing. Cover has just a hint of ring wear, and is great overall!)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Andrew Lloyd Webber

Odessa File
Decca, 1974. Near Mint-
A strange little soundtrack from Andrew Lloyd Webber – written to accompany this action film starring Jon Voight, based on the spy thriller by Frederick Forsythe. About half the soundtrack is classical tunes or traditional German numbers – but there's also some nice electric funk tunes ... LP, Vinyl record album
Decca, Late 50s. Very Good+
Not actually music with Kim Novak – but a set of musical backdrops by Morris Stoloff – designed as a package for the film Jeanne Eagels! The cover has a great color shot on the front, and smaller images of Kim on the back – and the music is surprisingly dark and moody. LP, Vinyl record album

Franz Waxman

Crime In The Streets
Decca, 1956. Very Good+
Hard to find soundtrack to this early Don Siegel film that starred John Cassavetes, Sal Mineo, and James Whitmore as a bunch of JD's. The score has a dramatic crime jazz sound, similar to Elmer Bernstein's work in the same vein – and the LP also includes Waxman's "Three Sketches for ... LP, Vinyl record album
Decca, 1955. Very Good+
Classic sides of Hollywood jazz, written for the early Brando biker flick The Wild One! Leith Stevens wrote, arranged, and conducted the material – and the players on the album include Jimmy Giuffre, Bud Shank, Bob Cooper, Shorty Rogers, Shelly Manne, and other likely suspects. Night Of The Iguana
MGM, 1964. Sealed
Kind of a strange mix – half dramatic tracks with a very spare, and almost avant garde approach, by Benjamin Frankel; and half Mexican trio tracks, recorded by Los Tres Guaramex in earlier years, included here on the soundtrack. The result is a bizarre shifting between moody quiet tracks, ... LP, Vinyl record album

United Artists, 1964. Near Mint-
A standout 60s soundtrack from the great Manos Hadjidakis – penned for a heist thriller from director Jules Dassin! John Barry/Shirley Bassey

Goldfinger
United Artists, 1964. Near Mint-
The soundtrack that put John Barry over the top – and to many, THE James Bond soundtrack! The album chills from the first notes of the haunting title theme – the majestic "Goldfinger", sung by Shirley Bassey with a tone that's as dangerous as a razor-sharp hat spinning ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lalo Schifrin

More Mission Impossible
Paramount, 1967. Very Good
A real stunner from Lalo – filled with tight jazzy soundtrack grooves, most of which sound even better than the work on the original Mission Impossible soundtrack! Mikis Theodorakis

Phaedra
United Artists, Mid 60s. Near Mint-
A really dark little soundtrack – penned by Mikis Theodorakis for Jules Dassin's remake of the Phaedra myth!
