Listen To The Ahmad Jamal Quintet

LP (Item 54829) Argo, 1960 — Condition: Very Good+

A nicely expanded take on the Ahmad Jamal sound of the early 60s – one that adds in guitar from Ray Crawford and violin from Joe Kennedy to Jamal's usual trio grooving! The main focus here is often still on the core group – which features Israel Crosby on bass and Vernell Fournier on drums – but the added elements are used sparely to bring in new colors to the tunes, with Kennedy bowing violin lines on most of side one, and Crawford hitting some of his great single-note lines on most of side two. Titles include "Ahmad's Waltz", "Valentina", "Tempo For Two", "Yesterdays", and "Baia".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Grey label Argo pressing with deep groove.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Ahmad Jamal

Cry Young
Cadet, 1967. Near Mint-
A sweet swinger from Ahmad – a record that has his usual trio (Jamil Nasser bass, Frank Gant drums) augmented by the super-hip Howard Roberts Chorale on a number of tracks. Roberts' "jazz with voices" style isn't as out there as some of the work of Coleridge Perkinson, but he does ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ahmad Jamal

Jamalca
20th Century, 1974. Very Good
After Ahmad spent the 60s playing mellow acoustic piano, he turned into a great jazz artist on the Fender Rhodes – and this album is one of the best he ever made in that genre. The record has some great orchestrations by Richard Evans, and Ahmad's tone is very rich and full, with a great ... LP, Vinyl record album

Milt Buckner

Mighty High
Argo, 1959. Very Good
Sweet and slow-burning organ from the great Milt Buckner – a really simple session overall, but one with lots of magical touches! Argo, 1961. Very Good
A rare session as a leader from drummer Red Holt – cut at a time when he was making waves with the Ramsey Lewis Trio, and years before his work in Young Holt Unlimited! Argo/Baybridge (Japan), 1962. Near Mint-
An early album by vibist Mike Mainieri – who later went on to do a lot of trippier albums in the late 60s. This one's a very nice quartet side with a straight feel, and was recorded for Chess/Argo in the early 60s, at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in New Jersey. The record is a lively mix of ...
