Everybody Knows Johnny Hodges

LP (Item 54808) Impulse, 1964 — Condition: Near Mint-
Gatefold
Also available
Johnny Hodges — Everybody Knows Johnny Hodges (with bonus tracks) ... CD 7.99

A nice little 60s album by Johnny Hodges – one of the few post-Verve sessions that has him still playing in the hard swinging Ellingtonia small combo mode of the 50s! Players are all strong – and include Jimmy Jones, Cat Anderson, Ray Nance, Harry Carney, and Paul Gonsalves – and the tracks are mostly older numbers, but redone here with a bit more 60s bounce. Hodges' alto is, as ever, great – and titles include "Everybody Knows", "The Jeep Is Jumpin", "Main Stem", "I Let A Song Go Out Of My Heart", and "Open Mike".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Creamy
Verve, Early 50s. Near Mint-
Swing session with small group backing by Billy Strayhorn, Jimmy Woode, Sonny Greer, and Clark Terry – and which features Johnny's warm tones soloing nicely on comfortable standards. Archie Shepp

Attica Blues
Impulse, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold
A classic of spiritual, soulful jazz – and one of Archie Shepp's greatest albums! The set was recorded in New York after a few free and festive years in Paris, and it's an amazing about-face that has Archie stepping into a world of righteous, full-on, political, and funky themes – the ... Pharoah Sanders

Karma
Impulse, 1969. Very Good Gatefold
Quite possibly the best-remembered album from Pharoah Sanders' legendary run at Impulse Records – a set that crossed over big, and sold to countless folks who might not have bought a jazz album this hip otherwise! The record was Sanders' first in the wake of Coltrane's passing – and it' ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gabor Szabo

More Sorcery
Impulse, 1967. Near Mint- Gatefold
A great record that's sort of a follow-up to Gabor's excellent Sorcerer LP – and like that one, features long tracks that have a spiralling modal feel that's much more serious, much more grooving, and a lot less campish than some of his other albums of the time. The album features a two-guita ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny Stitt & Paul Gonsalves

Salt & Pepper
Impulse, 1963. Very Good Gatefold
Head to head blowing from Sonny Sitt and Paul Gonsalves – just the kind of twin-horn performance that Stitt was famous for in his live battle days, and one that also reminds us that Gonsalves can be a very loose swinger when he wants to be! The tracks are all long, and played with the sort ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stripped-down Count Basie from the start of the 60s – a great little set that has the Count working with some of the best players from his larger group, in a session of even more intimate small combo material! Shirley Scott

For Members Only
Impulse, 1964. Near Mint- Gatefold
Groovin' set of tracks that has the lady organist in two settings – one with her trio with Jimmy Cobb on drums, the other with a hard swingin' big band led by Oliver Nelson. She's great with Nelson's band, and swings in the same hard way that Jimmy Smith does in the same setting. Tracks ... LP, Vinyl record album

Soul Happening!
Prestige, 1967. Very Good+
Groovy trio set, with a organ/guitar/drums lineup playing through a batch of soul hits like "Uptight" and "Wade in the Water", plus "Wee Dot", and a few pop hits. More groovy organ lines from Patterson, who's the main star here, and a surprisingly nice version of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, Late 60s. Very Good+
Totally totally cool LP that has this groovy group playing with Oliver Nelson – who plays soprano on most tracks.
