We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Doctor Is In & Out
Atlantic, 1976. Near Mint-
One of Yusef Lateef's funkier albums for Atlantic – and a record that features some great keyboard work from Kenny Barron! The liner notes indicate a current Lateef fascination with rhythm, and it tries to present this fascination in a way that implies a bigger intellectual approach to the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Sweet Life
Groove Merchant, 1972. Very Good
A great groover by Reuben Wilson – and one of his best albums ever! The funky organist really takes off from the sound of his earlier Blue Note albums here – hitting a vibe that's sharper, darker, and plenty darn righteous – still small combo jazz funk, but with a depth that we ... Black, Brown & Beautiful
Flying Dutchman, 1970. Very Good Gatefold
One of Oliver Nelson's hippest albums – a bold statement of righteous energy, and a fantastic summation of all the genius he'd created during the 60s as an arranger for other people's records! The record is almost at a Duke Ellington level – a complex yet soulful suite of tracks for ... LP, Vinyl record album
Testifyin' Time
Argo, 1965. Very Good
A really great little record – and one that goes way past the hokey soul jazz reference you might guess from the title! Bunky Green's definitely "testifyin" on the set – but he's really moving past 60s soul jazz cliches, and never falling into some of the too-gospelly notes ... LP, Vinyl record album
In Europe 1966
Prestige, 1969. Very Good
Trio sides recorded for MPS, but released in the US by Prestige. Milt's a little stiff on some of the cuts, but others have a nice groove, probably because of the rhythm accompaniment by Jimmy Woode and Jo Jones. Our faves include "Feeling Sorta Villingen", "Chit'Lins A La ... LP, Vinyl record album
Jazztet & John Lewis
Argo, 1961. Very Good
We'll be the first to admit that the piano and compositions of John Lewis can sometimes be a bit stiff and academic – but that's definitely not the case on this great little record! The album features interpretations of Lewis' work by the great Farmer/Golson Jazztet – and is a pretty ... LP, Vinyl record album
Donald Byrd's Best
Blue Note, Early 70s/1975. Near Mint-
A tasty collection of goodies that Donald recorded with the great Larry Mizell during the early 70s. Certainly not his all-inclusive best, but some of our favorite material by this legendary soul jazz trumpeter. The tracks have a sparkling electric jazz funk sound, with amazing production that ... Booker T Set
Stax, 1969. Very Good
Later work from Booker T and crew – an album that always gets lost in the shuffle, but which also includes lots of great moments, and a bit more funk than in earlier years! The rhythm section's loosening up a bit on the set – led by the mighty Al Jackson, and working past that tight ... LP, Vinyl record album
Think About It
Chimneyville/Atco, 1973. Very Good
An excellent album from King Floyd – possibly his best, and proof that the harder side of southern soul sound was still alive and well in the 70s! The record was one of the first few big ones to come out of the Malaco studios in Jackson – which would soon become one of the biggest hubs ... LP, Vinyl record album
Last Days And Time
Columbia, 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold
Earth Wind & Fire's first album for Columbia Records – the start of a really legendary run during the 70s! The sound here is a bit tighter than their first two for Warner Brothers – a groove that has funk and soul taking a bit more precedence over the jazz of their roots – ... LP, Vinyl record album
