Bahia (2LP set)

LP (Item 54780) Prestige, 1957/1958 — Condition: Near Mint-
2LP Gatefold
Not to be confused with the single LP Bahia, this 2LP set features tracks from that one – plus titles from Stardust, and the full album Cattin With Coltrane & Quinichette. The first LP features tracks with Trane blowing with the Red Garland Trio, plus one additional tune with the same group, plus Freddie Hubbard – and the second, as titled, features Trane in the frontline with Paul Quinichette, and trio backing by Mal Waldron, Julian Euell, and Ed Thigpen. Titles include "Cattin", "Vodka", "Anatomy", "Bahia", "Goldsboro Express", and "Time After Time".  © 1996-2022, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Doxy, 1958. Near Mint-
Classic late 50s 'Trane for Prestige – with backing by the Red Garland trio, and tracks in a loose comfortable format that really lets Coltrane open up on his solos. The rhythm team of Art Taylor and Paul Chambers still give the set a strong degree of tightness, though – and by no ... LP, Vinyl record album
Savoy, 1958. Near Mint-
An incredible chapter of John Coltrane's early career – one of a pair of albums he cut with trumpeter Wilbur Harden for Savoy records! The title's a bit misleading, as the sound here really isn't "mainstream" at all – but more in the longer modal mode that would emerge more ... LP, Vinyl record album

Excellent stuff – and one of the few rare early jazz sides to feature tuba player Ray Draper! Sun Ship
Impulse, 1965. Very Good+ Gatefold
Soaring work from the legendary John Coltrane Quartet – a session that was incredibly far-reaching for the time, and which originally was unissued until after the time of Coltrane's death! One of the nicest moments from Milt Jackson in the 50s – an open-ended blowing session cut with Miles Davis, in a mode that's even better than Jackson's work for Savoy at the time!
