❔
Not to be confused with the single LP Bahia, this 2LP set features tracks from that one – plus titles from Stardust, and the full album Cattin With Coltrane & Quinichette. The first LP features tracks with Trane blowing with the Red Garland Trio, plus one additional tune with the same group, plus Freddie Hubbard – and the second, as titled, features Trane in the frontline with Paul Quinichette, and trio backing by Mal Waldron, Julian Euell, and Ed Thigpen. Titles include "Cattin", "Vodka", "Anatomy", "Bahia", "Goldsboro Express", and "Time After Time".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Early 80s issue. Cover has light wear.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

John Coltrane

Impassioned Tenor-Man
Alto, Early 60s. Very Good+
There's not much in the way of notes on the cover, but the album feels like prime early 60s work from the Coltrane quartet – long tracks with bold solos – and titles that include "Cousin Mary", "Body & Soul", "Interpretations", and "March 2nd On ... LP, Vinyl record album
BYG (France), 1958. Very Good
French issue of some of Coltrane's groundbreaking recordings for Savoy from the late 50s – recorded in the company of a super-hip sextet with Wilbur Harden on trumpet, and done in a way so that the tracks open up nice and long, in strong modal grooves that point the way towards 'Trane's later ... LP, Vinyl record album
Bethlehem, 1957. Near Mint-
A nice selection of recordings done by John Coltrane for Bethlehem Records – mostly cut during December of 1957, and issued on the albums The Winner's Circle and Art Blakey Big Band! The music's a bit atypical for Trane, but is more than just a curiosity, with Trane fitting nicely into the ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Blue Train
Blue Note, 1957. Near Mint-
John Coltrane's classic – and only – recording as a leader for Blue Note! The album's no throwaway date, though – as it stands strongly with both Coltrane's other label work of the time, and with the best of the late 50s Blue Note scene – a time when the label was really ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Traneing In
Prestige, 1957. Near Mint-
A beautiful album that more than lives up to its evocative title – an early session from John Coltrane, filled with long tracks that slide along brilliantly! As with many other classic Prestige albums from Trane, backing is by the trio of Red Garland piano, Paul Chambers bass, and Art Taylor ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Africa/Brass
Impulse, 1961. Very Good+ Gatefold
Quite a different album than usual for John Coltrane, but a classic one too – and a set that has the great one exploring his ideas in a set of longer tracks recorded with an expanded jazz orchestra! The format's hardly the mainstream big band of the time – as Coltrane's filled the ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Expression
Impulse, 1967. Very Good+ Gatefold
The first Impulse album issued after the early death of John Coltrane – and one of his last sessions for the label as well! The record's got a somber, introspective quality that almost hints at the darkness to come – a new way of reaching the spiritual planes that Coltrane was striving ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Selflessness
Impulse, 1963/1965. Very Good+ Gatefold
A great set of unreleased recordings that was issued after John Coltrane's death, but which stands as an essential chapter in his groundbreaking body of work for Impulse! The album features 2 tracks recorded at the Newport Jazz fest in 1963 – both with Roy Haynes on drums, plus the usual ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prestige, 1958. Near Mint-
4 long tracks with plenty of room to roam around – a perfect setting for a young John Coltrane to demonstrate his distinctly different approach to the tenor sax! The album's one of Trane's key classics for Prestige – a quartet side that features backing by the trio of Red Garland on ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Ole
Atlantic, 1961. Near Mint-
A magnificent record from John Coltrane – one of his earliest expressions of unbridled spirituality, and a session that we've treasured for years! As you might guess from the title, there's a slight Latin focus to the record – but not one that has congas and bongos creating choppy ... LP, Vinyl record album

Yes Indeed
Swingville/Prestige, Early 60s. Very Good+
A small combo set – with Hopkins on piano, Buddy Tate on tenor, and Emmett Berry on trumpet! LP, Vinyl record album

Red Garland

Halleloo Y'All
Prestige, 1963. Very Good-
Red's usual trio bag is given a bit of a soul jazz twist (or perhaps we should say "a bit more of a soul jazz twist" since Red's always pretty darn soulful!) – in this set of tracks that has a slight gospel piano sound to it, and which also features Red playing organ on one track! ...
