We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Clovers
Atlantic, Late 50s. Very Good-
Seminal Atlantic Records work from The Clovers – one of those groups who were already great on their own, but then really took off once they hit the label! There's a rawness to these sides that rivals the early Drifters at their best – the Clyde McPhatter years of that group – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic/Hansa, 1978. Very Good Gatefold
A nice bit of space age disco fantasy from Boney M – a set that's got a few more electronic touches than some of the group's other records, but which still continues in a straight ahead poppy vein! There's a sound here that's arguably a bit more sophisticated than before – especially ... LP, Vinyl record album
Supersound
Atlantic, 1975. Very Good
Jimmy Castor bursts forward here with a definite supersound – a groove that's different than his fuzzier work for RCA Records, but still equally funky throughout! Castor's still quite the multi-instrumentalist on the record – as in addition to singing lead, he plays plenty of soprano ... LP, Vinyl record album

Let Me In Your Life
Atlantic, 1974. Very Good
Aretha Franklin and electric piano – a really great combination that makes for a whole new level of soulfulness in the 70s! The album's one of Franklin's greatest of the decade – a deepening of the sound she first brought to Atlantic in the 60s, and a maturation of that groove – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Pump The Nation
RFC/Atlantic, 1983. Near Mint-
A wicked bit of 80s groove from this cool little combo – a trio that features lead vocals from Cindy Mizelle and Stephen Miller, plus supporting vocals and keyboards from Khris Kellow! The groove here is nice and lean – lots of bass and keys riffing out in a snapping, funky 80s groove ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1967. Very Good-
Essential work by Aretha Franklin – one of her best albums for Atlantic in the late 60s, with tracks that virtually define the sound of hard soul during the late 60s! Atlantic, 1982. Near Mint-
One of the better soul groups of the early 80s – one who managed to mix electric keyboards with harmony vocals, yet still keep a sound that was pretty real. This album's got plenty of that great "wheeeeeep" keyboard sound, used to punctuate the songs' choruses, and lay down the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Confessin' The Blues
Atlantic, 1976. Very Good+
A 70s album, issued at a time when Esther Phillips was really riding high with her records on the Kudo label – but a set that brings together unissued sides recorded for Atlantic in the 60s! The style is a great mix of rootsy soul and hipper jazz – arranged by Onzy Matthews on side one ... LP, Vinyl record album
Aretha Arrives
Atlantic, 1967. Very Good+
Aretha Arrives in great style – and a mixture between her earlier vocal jazz years at Columbia, and her later southern soul sides of the 60s! On My Way
Atlantic, 1982. Near Mint-
A stone killer from Gwen McCrae – a set that's light years past the deep soul of Gwen's Miami roots – and which is given a tight, modern spin by the great Webster Lewis! Lewis produced, and plays plenty of keyboards here – and his fusion-inspired groove really helps unlock a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Jealousy
Atlantic, 1975. Very Good+
One of the best 70s mellow soul talents at Atlantic Records – sounding completely sublime here in a full set of Philly arrangements!
