Great Lars Gullin Vol 2 – 1953 – Rare & Unissued Recordings

LP (Item 547141) Dragon (Sweden), 1953 — Condition: Near Mint-

The famous Swedish baritonist, caught at the height of his youthful powers!  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(80s issue.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Lars Gullin

Lars Gullin Live
Columbia (Sweden), 1969. Near Mint-
Great late live work from Lars Gullin – material that features boppish live performances, at the level of his earliest recordings – but definitely done with some of the more modern inflections that he explored in the 60s! In addition to Gullin on baritone, other players include Lalle ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lars Gullin

Lars Gullin
EmArcy, Mid 50s. Near Mint-
Quite possibly the greatest American release by Swedish sax star Lars Gullin – a really tight little set with no gimmicks, no tricks – just tight grooving by a small Swedish group! Gullin is on baritone as usual, grooving the horn like few other players could – and the rest of ... LP, Vinyl record album
EmArcy, Mid 50s. Very Good-
One of the more enigmatic of Lars Gullin's mid 50s American albums – a session that features the master baritonist blowing alongside the Moretone Singers – a vocal ensemble who sings in cascading tones that kind of shade and color the background. The approach is different than other ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ronny Johansson

Elvin Jones & Richard Davis

Heavy Sounds
Impulse, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold
Heavy Sounds, indeed – a beautiful little set of dark-edged soul jazz from the mid 60s – co-led by bassist Richard Davis and drummer Elvin Jones! The sound here is a bit different than any work ever released by either player as a leader – and is almost more in the vein of Blue ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ornette Coleman

Tomorrow Is the Question!
Contemporary, 1959. Sealed
Tomorrow may be the question, but the record screams "today!" – and even this many years after its recording, this early set by Ornette Coleman has an energy and presence that cannot be denied! The sound here is kind of a rougher take on the mode that would gel more strongly on ... LP, Vinyl record album
Riverside, 1958. Very Good
A classic album from Chet – and one that's got a perfect mix of vocal and instrumental moments, of the sort you don't find easily on other albums! Atlantic, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold
Wild electric work from Les McCann – an album of free, open sounds that's quite a change from his styles of the 60s – and from most of his other work of the 70s too! Side one features an extended 26 minute track titled "The Lovers" – a slow-building number that has Les ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gabor Szabo

1969
Skye, 1969. Very Good Gatefold
One of Gabor Szabo's amazing late 60s albums for the Skye label – trippy, jazzy, and with a mod exotica vibe that would never be matched again! Gabor's playing guitar in a two-guitar frontline, which makes for lots of dreamy interplay between the strings – a shifting pattern of sound ... LP, Vinyl record album

Monty Alexander

Taste Of Freedom
MGM, 1970. Very Good
Massively groovy work from Monty Alexander – thanks to some hip, soulful backings from the legendary Johnny Pate! The sound here is a lot more swinging than some of Alexander's trio albums – much more of a Verve-styled session with fuller backings behind a main soloist – in this ... LP, Vinyl record album

Duke Pearson

How Insensitive
Blue Note, 1969. Very Good
Another bold step forward in the too-short career of Duke Pearson – and one of the last few records before his untimely death! The session departs from previous Pearson work by using vocals on most tracks – sometimes a solo singer, either Andy Bey or Flora Purim, and sometimes a larger ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lucky Thompson

I Offer You
Groove Merchant, 1973. Very Good
An excellent album of mellow soulful tracks by Lucky Thompson – with a sweet 70s groove that's quite different from most of his other recordings! The album's got a cool mellow feel – with Lucky veering much more towards a CTI-ish electric mode than the style he used on most of his ... LP, Vinyl record album
