Magic Touch

LP (Item 54688) Riverside, 1962 — Condition: Very Good+

One of Tadd Dameron's last true jazz sides – featuring the bop maestro composing, arranging, and conducting for a large group that includes Bill Evans, Johnny Griffin, Joe Wilder, Clark Terry, and Philly Joe Jones. There's a bit of Ellington in the album – with somber washes of mood and color, in a manner that was always one of Dameron's strongest suits – and the quality of the players, especially Evans, really adds a lot to the album. Titles include "On A Misty Night", "Just Plain Talkin", "You're A Joy", "Swift As The Wind", and "Dial B For Beauty".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(OJC pressing.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Blues For Tomorrow
Riverside, Late 50s. Near Mint-
Kind of a hodge-podge from different sessions – but a nice little record, and one that's come to stand on its own over the years, thanks to the strength of the work! The album's a set of previously unissued tunes from Riverside sessions of the late 50s - material from classic dates that didn' ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sound Of Sonny
Riverside, 1957. Very Good+
A landmark album from Sonny Rollins – a record that really lives up to its title, as it shows the maturing tenorist really finding his own voice in jazz – a sound that's unlike any other! Barry Harris

Newer Than New
Riverside, 1961. Very Good
An excellent early session from Barry Harris – one of his rarest, and a group side that features playing by two young bright stars, fellow Detroiter Charles McPherson on alto, and the talented Lonnie Hillyer on trumpet! The session's got a lot of lyrical flourishes, but the horn players also ... LP, Vinyl record album

Everybody Digs Bill Evans – or at least it certainly seems that way from the cover endorsements by Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderley, and Ahmad Jamal – but the real proof is in the record, and the set is a great one from Bill's classic years on Riverside! Ezz-Thetics (Riverside)
Riverside, 1961. Very Good+

Early work by Dave Pike – one of his first albums ever, recorded with an all-star lineup that includes Barry Harris on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. Eddie Lockjaw Davis & Johnny Griffin

Blues Up & Down
Riverside, 1961. Very Good
Lockjaw and Johnny Griffin cut a pile of excellent albums together during the early 60s, but this one's one of our favorites! The record's a bit tighter than most – with the twin-tenor lineup grooving together on some short hard vamping numbers that have a very in-the-pocket groove. The ... LP, Vinyl record album
Riverside, 1955. Very Good
An early full length album by Randy Weston – one that mostly features tunes by other composers, all given a slightly modern twist at the piano! The style here isn't as arch-modern or African-inspired as some of Weston's other 50s work – but it's still plenty darn great, and very much ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herb Geller with Mark Murphy

Rhyme & Reason (Discovery pressing)
Discovery, 1975. Near Mint-
