We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Elektra, 1980. Very Good-
We're not ashamed to admit we're big fans of Queen around here, and why shouldn't we be? One of their biggest LPs, this one hardly needs any introduction from us, with the massive hit "Another One Bites The Dust", that appeals to beat diggers and mullet-headed rockers alike! Also ... A groundbreaking record from Kraftwerk – a set that unified the 70s worlds of analogue electronics and prog rock – yet somehow managed to set the scene for a whole new sound to come! Trippy late 60s pop from Peter Sarstedt – almost folk-rock, but with a fuller, more mind-bending style that kind of recalls Donovan, or the host of other less-remembered artists who picked up from Dylan and took things in a headier direction! The production is really wonderful – with ... LP, Vinyl record album

A very cool promo EP that brings together 2 tracks from each of the solo Kiss albums released in 1978. We've never been the biggest fans of those records, but we are pretty darn happy that the EP features Ace Frehley's wonderful "New York Groove" – a funky Russ Ballard rocker that's ... Probe/ABC, Late 60s. Very Good
The amazing debut of Soft Machine! It's hard to find a more seminal moment of jazz rock from the British scene – and there's certainly few albums from its generation that stand up as well over the years as this one! A surprising charmer from Bryan Ferry – his second solo album away from Roxy Music, and somehow even more focused than the first! The groove here is still very much in a Roxy mode, but tighter, leaner, and with more of a focus on Ferry's captivating vocals. And although a few tracks on the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mercury, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold
Brilliantly baroque psych from Aphrodite's Child – a stone classic cut while the group was in exile in Paris – heavy on drums, and with soaring keyboards that really work wonders with the vocals!
