LP, Vinyl record album

✈
❔

Although he's made many snoozy records in his time, the early Al Grey albums for Argo are pretty hard swingin', and have a lot of nice surprises. This one's got a very young Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, and the great Dave Burns on trumpet. Tracks are short, with a hard swingin' groove that's still popular on the south side of Chicago today. Lots of nice originals, like "Deep Fried", "Boss Tina", and "Stone Crazy".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Gray label Argo pressing with deep groove. Cover has a small cutout hole, sticker, and some pen on back.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Chubby Jackson

Chubby's Back
Argo, 1957. Very Good+
With a name like Chubby, the set ought to be a snoozer – but it swings nicely, thanks to some strong bass work by Jackson! The group's a Chicago ensemble, featuring lesser-known players of the 50s – like Vito Price, Cy Touff, Don Lamond, and Jimmy Gourley – plus trombone by Bill ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ramsey Lewis

Stretching Out
Argo, 1960. Very Good-
Not much stretching going on here, as most tracks are three minutes or under – but Ramsey's in fine fine form, working with the classic Young/Holt trio lineup, crafting very groovy little numbers that have a lot more going on underneath than you'd expect from the surface! Includes the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny Stitt

Rearin Back
Argo, 1962. Very Good
A great little groover from Sonny Stitt – blowing here with a very soulful group that features piano by soul jazz giant Ronnie Matthews! Matthews is at his prime here, and his heavy left-handed approach lays out some wonderful grooves for Stitt – crackling little tunes that are extra-gr ... LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny Griffin

Johnny Griffin (aka JG)
Argo, Late 50s. Near Mint-
Excellent early work by Johnny Griffin – a rare quartet session recorded in Chicago, with the same lineup (Junior Mance & Wilbur Ware) that appeared with him on Ware's legendary Chicago Scene album! The tracks are straight-ahead quartet hardbop – short, but with great tenor work by ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ramsey Lewis

In Crowd
Argo, 1965. Very Good+
Easily one of the biggest selling jazz albums of the 60s – a crowning achievement for Ramsey Lewis and his popular trio with Eldee Young on bass and Redd Holt on drums! The set was recorded live at the Bohemian Caverns in DC, and the trio are perfect in the setting – going at the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Art Farmer & Benny Golson Jazztet & John Lewis

Jazztet & John Lewis
Argo, 1961. Near Mint-
We'll be the first to admit that the piano and compositions of John Lewis can sometimes be a bit stiff and academic – but that's definitely not the case on this great little record! The album features interpretations of Lewis' work by the great Farmer/Golson Jazztet – and is a pretty ... LP, Vinyl record album

Billy Taylor

Taylor Made Jazz
Argo, Late 50s. Very Good
Think what you want about Billy Taylor, this session's a nice little cooker that was cut around the same time as Argo's famous hard swing sets by Paul Gonsalves, Jimmy Woode, and Clark Terry – possibly the same time as those sessions, as they all seem to overlap personnel and mood quite a bit. ... LP, Vinyl record album
Argo, 1961. Near Mint-
A classic from Stitt – cut during the underground days of the early 60s, when both he and Gene Ammons seemed to be recording for just about every jazz label around, and when they both seemed to be doing an awful lot of work in Chicago. This album was done in a flurry that Jug and Stitt cut ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Young

Young John Young
Argo, Late 50s. Very Good
John Young was one of a tight core of Chicago soul jazz pianists who strongly influenced that city's jazz tradition. This first LP on Argo is still his best, and it's a darn tough record to find in nice shape. The tracks are simple piano trio material, and a number of them are standards, but ... LP, Vinyl record album
Argo, 1958. Very Good
Ramsey and the trio are on the front in tuxedoes, top hats, and tails – but the overall sound of the record is much more in keeping with their soul jazz grooves of the late 50s – not necessarily gentlemanly, but with a worldly appreciation for a variety of styles of music, and perhaps a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Eric Dolphy

Out To Lunch
Blue Note, 1964. Very Good+
One of Eric Dolphy's lasting classics – and possibly the ultimate album of "new thing" jazz from the mid 60s! The record's got an even sharper edge than previous Dolphy recordings for Prestige – a really unique combination of instrumentation that includes Freddie Hubbard on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dave Baby Cortez

Tweetie Pie
Roulette, Mid 60s. Very Good+
Not as funky as the albums he'd later cut in the early 70s, but still a lot of short groovy little organ tracks with the Baby Cortez feel to them. Hugo & Luigi produce his renditions of pop songs and R&B numbers that were popular at the time, like "Shake", "Watermelon ... LP, Vinyl record album
