We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Fania, 1979. Very Good+
A great album of salsa tracks recorded at the end of the 70s – when Ray was returning to the scene after a prolonged hand injury kept him out of music for a while. Despite this time off, though, Ray's in top top form – coming back to basics with a really heavy groove, picking up right ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cotique, Mid 60s. Very Good+
A real departure for Joey Pastrana – a hip set of highly percussive tracks that marks a shift away from his earlier Latin soul work. The work on congas and bongos on the album really stands out – stark and hard on the intros for some cuts, and stretched out in the middle of others for ... LP, Vinyl record album
ESP, 1969. Poor
A legendary bit of Latin from the New York scene of the 60s – recorded by a host of youthful players working under the direction of percussionist Montego Joe! The group's name is a contraction of "Harlem Youth" – a program in which all players participated, as part of an ... LP, Vinyl record album

Alegre, 1968. Very Good+
The hard ones serve up a great blend of Latin soul, late 60s pop, and some heavy-hitting touches! Bobby Cruz is still singing a few of these tunes in his slightly more romantic style of the 60s – but the best cuts on the album have a snapping, upbeat quality that really makes them groove ... Fania, 1979. Very Good- Gatefold
An amazing achievement for Ruben Blades – a full suite of tracks conceived and composed by Ruben as a "disco drama" on wax! The work isn't the disco-styled album you might think from this description – and is more of a mini-opera or concept album by Blades, one that features ... LP, Vinyl record album

Latin Jewels
Fantasy, Early 60s. Very Good
Classic mellow Latin groovers from Joe, and one of the nicer sides he ever cut for Fantasy. The record's got Joe working with his quintet on a mixture of Latin standards – like "Frenesi", "Sin Ti", "Perfida", and "Amor, Amor, Amor" – and the ... LP, Vinyl record album

An excellent collection of work by this groundbreaking Cuban group – featuring 6 long tracks licensed from their glory days at the Egrem label, packaged with much better sound that you often hear on the original pressings! Riverside, 1962. Very Good
Wonderful early work from Ray Barretto – proof that he was one heck of a hip cat, even at the start! The album's got an approach to Latin jazz that's certainly informed by the charanga sound of the New York scene in the early 60s – but one that's also opened up a bit more to new ideas ...
