Zoot Sims' Party

LP (Item 546268) Choice, 1974 — Condition: Near Mint-
Not as much of a party as you might expect from the title, but quite a lively little album – and possibly one of Zoot's best from the 70s! There's a tightly fluid feel to this record that we really love a lot – not one that's electric or slick, but served up by a great backing trio that includes Jimmy Rowles on piano, Mickey Roker on drums, and Bob Cranshaw on bass – all coming together in ways that often groove slightly, which is a real surprise for an album by Zoot – and a very nice surprise at that! Zoot himself plays both tenor and soprano sax, and although some of the tunes here are familiar ones, they're taken with unusual arrangements and plenty of personal focus on the solos. Titles include "Fred", "Restless", "Caravan", "Dream Dancing", and "The Very Thought Of You".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has light wear and aging.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Pablo, 1975. Near Mint-
Way more than just a Gershwin Songbook sort of record – thanks to some tremendous blowing here by Zoot Sims, who's mellowed nicely with age, and comes up with a wonderful sound for the record! It may just be us, but there seems to be a lot more soul in Zoot's horn than ever before – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Zoot Sims

Soprano Sax
Pablo, 1976. Near Mint-
LP...$9.99 11.99
A rare treat from Zoot Sims – an album of soprano sax material, recorded in striking contrast to his more familiar tenor! The sound is oddly more traditional than usual – and unlike many other players in the 70s, Sims doesn't use the soprano in a Coltrane-inspired mode, but in a way ... LP, Vinyl record album

Zoot Sims

Zoot (Argo)
Argo, 1956. Good
An obscure session for Zoot Sims – but a nice one! The group's a quartet – with Johnny Williams on piano, Gus Johnson on drums, and Knobby Totah on bass – and Zoot's blowing in an unfettered setting that reminds us a bit of Sonny Stitt in similar settings at the same time! ... Sal Mosca

For You
Choice, 1979. Near Mint-
Beautiful solo work from pianist Sal Mosca – an under-acknowledged genius for mixing modern and lyrical modes! The set was recorded in Sal's own studio in the late 70s – you can't get more intimate than that – but there's a freely expressive quality that's really amazing, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bobby Hutcherson

Happenings
Blue Note, 1966. Very Good
One of the greatest Bobby Hutcherson albums for Blue Note – a classic session recorded in quartet form, with a style that seems to set a whole new standard for the vibes in modern jazz! The group here is sublime – Herbie Hancock on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums ... LP, Vinyl record album

Randy Weston with Billy Harper

Carnival
Arista Freedom, 1974. Very Good+
An unusual record for Randy Weston – a freewheeling live set recorded at Montreux in 1974, with Billy Harper joining Weston's group on tenor and flute, playing long spiritual solos that work wonderfully next to Weston's spiralling piano lines! Harper's searching quality really opens up the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Hank Mobley

Another Workout
Blue Note, 1961/1985. Near Mint-
A rare second chapter to Mobley's famous Workout album – recorded in the early 60s, but not issued until the mid 80s – and even then, only momentarily on vinyl! The session's a great one – a quartet outing with a structure that's similar to Hank's classic Soul Station record, but ... LP, Vinyl record album

Art Blakey

Free For All
Blue Note, 1964. Near Mint-
Hardly a free for all at all – as the album's a masterpiece of focus and direction, and a classic set from the sextet lineup of the Jazz Messengers!
