We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Diana Ross & The Supremes Join The Temptations
Motown, 1968. Very Good
Motown's two slickest and most successful groups match up perfectly in this surprisingly nice album from 1968! It might be easy to write this off as a mistake or inessential session – but thanks to some great arrangements by HB Barnum, Paul Riser, and Gene Page, plus great vocals by the ... TCB
Motown, Mid 60s. Very Good Gatefold
One of the odder 60s LPs from the Supremes, the soundtrack to a film that starred the group, with some guest appearances by The Temptations – in Motown-show versions of tracks that often feature the singers lapsing into medleys of other tunes, or doing some popular hits of the day. Commodores
Motown, 1977. Very Good
Not The Commodores first album – but a really that really broke them out of the box and exposed the group to a huge new audience! The album hits perfectly on both sides of the group's strengths – the tight ensemble funk on which they were raised, and some of the sweeter aspects that ... LP, Vinyl record album
Supremes A Go Go
Motown, 1966. Very Good-
One of the biggest charting LPs by The Supremes – and one of the best, too! The girls are opening it up a bit here – getting in on some of The Miracles Go Go action of the period, and laying down tunes that have a bit more of a northern groove to them – relying a bit more on a ... Rise Sleeping Beauty
Motown, 1975. Very Good+
One of Lenny's first solo records – rawer than later work, thanks probably to the fact that he produced the record with Chester Thompson. Thompson plays organ and arp on the record, and gives many tracks a nice heavy funk sound that's similar to his and Williams' work in Tower of Power. ... LP, Vinyl record album

Devil In Me
Motown, 1977. Near Mint-
Thelma's one of those singers who must have been waiting years for disco to come around and help her find a reason to sing! Her career was slightly ill-timed in the beginning, coming along with a baroque soul beginning that was great, yet somewhat out of place in the early 70s. But enter a record ... Forever Michael
Motown, 1975. Very Good Gatefold
A great one from Michael Jackson – easy to miss between the pillars of his earlier work with his brothers, and his later stuff with Quincy Jones, but equally great for that reason! The album's got Michael singing in a smooth soul mode that's really nice – almost like Smokey Robinson's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Motown, 1966. Very Good
A very strong compilation of some of the best soul that Mary Wells recorded for Motown – and probably her only real album for the label. Although issued in 1966, the material hearkens from earlier days at Motown – and titles include "The One Who Really Loves You", "Two ... LP, Vinyl record album
