❔
Long, open-ended later work from Chet Baker – the kind of album that still had him working out interesting ideas in his music! The group features Harold Danko on piano, Greg Herbert on tenor, Ron Carter on bass, and Mel Lewis on drums – on cuts that include "ESP", "Shifting Down", "Tidal Breeze", and "Once Upon A Summertime".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes the booklet. A nice copy.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

INA (France), 1978. Near Mint-
A rare French set – with Phil Markovitz on piano, Scott Lee on bass, and Jeff Brilinger on drums. All tracks are nice and long, too – and include versions of the Wayne Shorter tunes "House Of Jade" and "Beautiful Black Eyes" – a bit unusual for Chet! LP, Vinyl record album
Artists House, 1977. Near Mint- Gatefold
Surprisingly great quartet tracks from two cats we're normally used to hearing in a big band – Thad Jones on cornet and Mel Lewis on drums – joined by Harold Danko on piano and Rufus Reid on bass. Tracks are long, and titles include "But Not For Me", "Autumn Leaves" ... LP, Vinyl record album

Paul Desmond

Paul Desmond
Artists House, 1978. Very Good+ Gatefold
Great 70s work from Paul Desmond – a sweet little quartet date that easily rivals his genius live album for A&M from the same stretch! The record's done in the simple, unadorned style that made the short-lived Artist House label so great – a real back to basics setting that's free ... LP, Vinyl record album

Pharoah Sanders

Karma
Impulse, 1969. Very Good Gatefold
Quite possibly the best-remembered album from Pharoah Sanders' legendary run at Impulse Records – a set that crossed over big, and sold to countless folks who might not have bought a jazz album this hip otherwise! The record was Sanders' first in the wake of Coltrane's passing – and it' ... LP, Vinyl record album

Paul Gonsalves

Tell It The Way It Is!
Impulse, 1963. Very Good Gatefold
Paul Gonsalves tells it the way it is – but in a hiply swinging sort of way that showcases his rising star as a leader in the 60s! The groove here is freed up from some of the earlier cliches in Gonsalves' work with larger groups – leaving a lot more room for his great sense of tone ... LP, Vinyl record album

Grover Washington Jr

Mister Magic
Kudu, 1974. Very Good+
Pure dark magic from Grover Washington – a record that was a megahit back in the 70s, but which still sounds amazing many decades later! There's a sound here that's completely sublime – and the album is to Grover's career what the first 2 CTI sets by Bob James were to his – a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Les McCann & The Jazz Crusaders

Jazz Waltz
Pacific Jazz, Mid 60s. Very Good
A real cooker – and a stone soulful set that works some real magic at so many levels! First off, the record brings together two of the hottest talents on the west coast scene of the 60s – pianist Les McCann, and the firey young Jazz Crusaders – who are really burning here with a ... Charlie Shavers

Paris Jazz
Sunset, Mid 60s. Very Good
Great late recordings from trumpeter Charlie Shavers – ostensibly recorded in Paris, where he spent a good part of his time in the 60s, although issued here with no real notes, which makes it tough to tell the real origin of the material! Charlie's tone still has that sweet and sparkly edge ... LP, Vinyl record album
World Pacific, 1962. Very Good+
A very different take on this score than the vocal one – thanks to great work from Victor Feldman on both piano and vibes – in a hip trio with Bob Whitlock on bass, and the great LA drummer Lawrence Marable – who really keeps things great at the bottom! Titles include "Typica ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Ruffin

Groove Governor
SOUL, 1970. Very Good
One of those Motown treasures that would have been a runaway hit, were it issued on a label with less going on – but which somehow got lost amidst the shuffle of all the other Motor City greatness of the time! Don't let obscurity make you think that Jimmy Ruffin's not giving his best, though ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sam Cooke

Try A Little Love
RCA, 1965. Very Good
Released shortly after Sam's death, this is a beautiful batch of ballad tracks to remember how sweet his voice was. The production's a bit pop, but Sam's singing is as heavenly as ever. Titles include "When A Boy Falls In Love", "Try A Little Love", "Bridge Of Tears" ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stratavarious

Stratavarious
Roulette, 1977. Very Good+
A great album of jazzy club tracks – put together by John Usry Jr, who'd done some work with other 70s club acts like Three Degrees, Love Committee, and First Choice. Most of the tracks on the record feature female backing vocals – in the style of work by those other groups – but ... LP, Vinyl record album
